Some sort of Bentley Special (but not the Pacey-Hassan), maybe at Prescott. Riley RMA in the left background.

Cold and cold I'm afraid... although I can see why you might think that, particularly re the car.

Might it be the R.R.A. (Richardson Racing Automobile) rebuilt / modified by Geoff Richardson in the late 40s to late 50s and early 60s ?… if so had various body and chassis modifications; engines included E.R.A. and Jaguar and latterly had an Aston Martin chassis … but had evolved from the Percy Maclure Riley.

Dunk,

Surely that picture is too early for the RRA special or are there more than one of these cars with this name? I thought the RRA was made from the remains of the abortive Aston Martin DB3S GP car, which Aston built in 55-56, so must date from after this. This was raced once by Reg Parnell in its original form in the Wigram Trophy in NZ but with a sports car engine after the original GP version self destructed. This probably from main bearing failure, which is still the weak point on the Aston/Lagonda W.O.Bentley designed engines and was only cured when Marek completely redesigned it to the wonderful DB engine.

Probably …  but there were previous incarnations of the same RRA car dating from 1948 … . See Denis Jenkinson's  'The Racing Car Pocket Book' page 216.

Would a year of 1950 for the photograph help a little?  Venue is a little unreasonable to ask for on reflection - so I'll give you Siverstone.

[Edit]

Meant to say, no guesses close yet.

British car.  I'll post a clearer picture if nobody gets close.

I thought there were too many trees for Silverstone  :) It always seems like something made in the middle of the Northamptonshire desert.

Wilson

If it hadn't said in the album I would never have known... although some of the other photographs look suitably desert like.

Does this help?

Could it be one of Geoffrey Taylor's Altas, made in Surbiton. The body is obviously very professionally made, with the double curved panels at the front, very smooth. There were a number of excellent panel works in the Brooklands area before the war, making one off bodies for racing and sports cars. Sadly few of them survived the war, given that Brooklands itself didn't, after the runway had to be extended through the banking to allow Wellington bombers to take off and land at the Vickers factory.

OK - obviously a little obscure.

The complete photographs are:

Sorry about quality, prints are tiny and, although original was Leica, the copy is courtesy mobile phone.

You might also be interested in: http://www.motorsportmagazine.com/archive/article/december-1987/64/chevell-alvis which gives a little history of the car.  Unsurprisingly it's still around - it shows up if you apply for a London Congestion Charge as an Alvis of unknown model (my first place for checking number plates).

Some good tries. Dunk, why don't you take the baton?

Tried Google and You Tube searches for 'Healey Silverstone', '1950s Brighton Speed Trials' and 'British Empire Trophy' hoping to see the whole of what we now know is the Chevell Alvis competing … but without success.

If nobody else has a 'name this car' ready I'll post one later today.

Best wishes

Answer to include car maker, model and type of vehicle.

Clue:  Has express connections and unlikely ever used in anger

Best wishes

Dunk,

Is that an Armadillo airfield protection vehicle, fitted with a 37mm COW auto cannon? Not sure about the express link, as I think "snail" might be a better link, as the donor lethargic Bedford OY truck, which I did my OTC driving test in, might struggle with all the armour plating.   :)

Wilson you're thinking along the right lines but it's not a Bedford … and Bedford is not strictly a car maker.  'Express' clue is linked to 'communication' rather than 'speed'.

I thought about a Daimler Armoured Car but the wheels/hubs are wrong. As I ended up our OTC Daimler Armoured Car driver (NOT a privilege compared with driving the Ferrets) and had to change wheels after punctures a number of times, I am unfortunately overly familiar with the hubs and 80kg+ wheel/tyre. I therefore wonder about a Humber of some variety but again, most of these were 4WD with big protruding central hubs. Did someone make an airfield protection vehicle based on the WD Humber Super Snipe staff car?
