wlaidlaw Posted August 28, 2014 Share #6761 Posted August 28, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) John, The last one I did going through that area, was the Transamerica Rally in 2012 and while we were in Colorado Springs, of course we had a run up to the top of Pikes Peak. Our fuel injected 1970 280SL, with a barometric capsule on the injector pump was just fine but our friend’s 1968 Shelby 500 Mustang ahead of us was laying down a smoke screen. I am going to take some leaner jets for the Webers on the DB4GT, as it will almost certainly be too rich above 6000 feet. Really looking forward to the event and hope to take lots of good photos. wlaidlaw Posted September 4, 2014 Share #6770 Posted September 4, 2014 Maserati Type 26? I can why you would think that but this was not really designed as a race car although I do believe that its most famous driver did buy it from the factory and did use it in a few races. wlaidlaw Posted September 5, 2014 Share #6773 Posted September 5, 2014 Correct .....but. My best friend’s father while I was at school, was a well known racing driver at Brooklands and a friend of George Eyston, the driver of the Panhard. Up in the his loft, we found a tethered petrol (gasoline) car model of the Panhard, which my friend’s father had been given in the late 1920’s. We asked if we could try to get it running and what it was (we failed to get it running as the magneto was dead). The story he told about the record car was that it was only very nominally a Panhard but was mainly built at the Bean Motor Company in Staffordshire from assorted Panhard bits and pieces specially for Eyston. Whether that was true or just a scurrilous rumour I don’t know but Bean Engineering certainly built Eyston’s later 8 wheeled Thunderbolt LSR car. This was an amazing device with two 36.5L V12 Rolls Royce supercharged Type R engines. One of the engines came out of Malcolm Campell’s Bluebird and the other from one of the Schneider Trophy S6B Supermarine float planes. There were only 20 of these engines built, so they tended to get passed around. They formed the basis for the WW2 RR Griffon engine, used in later marks of Spitfire. Sadly burnt away to nothing in a Warehouse fire during WW2 in New Zealand. Wilson
wlaidlaw Posted September 6, 2014 Share #6774 Posted September 6, 2014 The “beKnighted” misspelling was supposed to lead to a Knight double sleeve valve engine. A bit obscure I know. Wilson
