...you are really a good researcher, Wilson! Year is correct, country is correct, work a little a t the marque. Not to mention, that our riddle car has similar roots like OPEL. What about the connection to England? As far as I know, OPEL has more connections to USA between the wars...

Cheers, Andreas

I was thinking of the tie up between Opel and Vauxhall, albeit not in 1914. I know it is not a Mercedes or a Benz, because the shape of the radiator is wrong. Mercedes has a tie up with England as at one time it was the same company as Daimler UK. I am beginning to run out of ideas except for weird makes like Hansa but I cannot think of any link to England.

Wilson,

you are running out of ideas? This would never happen to the automobile company our riddle car company is now a part of. Think olympic - go forward, up the steepest hills!

Certainly there is a Horch which looks a bit like this but my books say 1908 not 1914. I also cannot think of any connection to England. The fifth ring of Auto Union was I thought, Hochleistungs Motor GmbH, formed by Hans Stuck and Ferdinand Porsche in 1932 so obviously far too late for this car. This was the company, which after it moved to the Horch works, made the Silver Arrow mid engined Auto Union GP cars.

It think it must be NSU then but again connection to UK? I believe that they were merged with Auto Union, when VW bought Auto Union in the late 1960's from Mercedes. I actually had a shared Auto Union AU1000SP when I was living in Montreux, Switzerland in the early 1960's. I was at college there and we were banned from keeping cars. We rented a lock up garage from Charlie Chaplin to hide it away in Vevey. I had to go and pay him in cash every month and was told the money had to be given to him in person and not to one of his staff, in case they stole it.

Seems that we have a winner...

Wilson, it is NSU, in our case: the 5/15 Sport from 1914, photo taken at this years Schloss Dyck Classic Days, in unrestored condition.

Concerning the clues:

- similar roots with OPEL: NSU was producing bicycles before they switched to automobiles and motorcycles

- "fifth ring": 1969 NSU and AUDI melted to AUDI NSU Auto Union AG

- "a big one": Around 1955, NSU was the world largest producer of motorcycles

- "connections to England": Walter William Moore, former Norton constructor, worked since 1929 for NSU and developed some famous models in a certain british style (OSL series) which had been produced for more than 20 years then. The other connection is the racing driver Tom Bullus, who raced NSU motorcycles since 1930 as a works driver. He retired 1932 and married Hilde Gehr, the daughter of an NSU board member, and went back to England.

So Wilson, its your turn again!

In the trade, the condition of this NSU would be described as "Patina'd" rather like estate agent describes a minuscule house as a "bijou residence". It is actually rather nice to see one like this, rather than the gleaming Concours d'Elegance specials, which arrive on a trailer and only move as far as the judging stand and back.

Now the next one: So that I am not accused of being elitist, this is a very ordinary car indeed and made in a somewhat unusual country.

Wilson, this is an interesting vehicle. If not a design element, this looks an like air cooled rear engine car. Assume it´s not a Porsche 911 as it looks more like a Lada or Moskvitch, but they made water cooled front engine cars. For a ZAZ it looks too boxy. The air inlet looks a bit like old Renault, but again too boxy design. Same with Tatras.

You mentioned an unusual country, well something like Australia, Brazil, Argentinia, India or the like? Is that a model produced under licence?

Also looks like a Hino Contessa (asian and Israel Renault 4CV licence).

Ronald,

I thought I might have you stumped for longer than that! It is indeed a Hino Contessa but this is the licence built version made in Israel. As you say the original was in turn a rebodied Renault Dauphine. Your turn

Ronald,

I wonder if Michelotti also helped with the saloon, as the doors look just like Triumph Toledo doors, which he also designed. I saw a coupé many years ago but it must be 30 years ago since they all rusted away in the UK.
