I have the Elmar M 24 but have not handled the Summilux 24 at all. The part number for the new 35's hood is the same as that of my Elmar M. Obviously the lens diameter must be identical. I would think that Leica Camera have chosen that hood as it intrudes little into the viefinder image in use. On my lens there is a tighter area in the thread at the end and then the small step engages against the corresponding step on the lens front to index the exact position. On mine the hood has never loosened or moved in my bag nor in use. The new lens has a neat thread protector that screws over the external thread if you are not using the hood. Personally I never remove the hoods at all in use except if I wanted to fit another filter perhaps (like the M Pol)

Geoff,

Thanks for this information. What you stated is exactly what I was hoping to hear.

Doug

OK, what are "current mono-dispersal emulsions"?

Name three.

Basically means the T-Max and Delta-type films, and color films that also use T(abular)-grain technology (although from the context I'd guess Erwin means the B&W films specifically, since he is speaking of emulsion thickness, and color films have multiple layers regardless of grain technology):

Among others: Ektar 100, T-Max 100, Delta 100, Ektachrome G, Fuji ACROS....

... Good to see that some of the old hands are still hanging around. I would come back, but my interests have been split by having separate M8 and M9 fora, and I find it a bit much to keep up with both....

Yes, the main excitement around here has been waiting for M9s. Not like those heady days when we were learning about dichroic filters, the M8's image compression and CornerFix! ;)

And now with M8s appearing on the used shelves, there is a tendency for the same questions to come around again.

Scott Kirkpatrick (http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/124167-looking-owner-large-set-coded-lenses.html#post1329221) mentioned your interests had been swayed by both medium format and a new addition to the family. Congratulations!

I can name eight ........ But I don't like to show off

No?

Interesting!

Though there was a lot to see coming out of your Ms, and on the Continent showing off is also sin, but more of a pecadillo :) .

I have a brand new 35mm cron....Would anyone be tempted to sell the Cron for the new Lux?
No, in fact once I got my Summicron I stopped using my Summilux and sold it in January. The Summicron is a much more usable lens for some reason, at least to me. I wouldn't trade it for this new lens but I will wait to see how it works out. Given Leica's track record with new products I'm in no rush to "early adopt".

A very nice sounding lens by all reports. Leica has had a 35 f 1.4 since time immemorial. This is then a redesigned and upgraded lens with latest lab technology. Now I'm sitting at my computer, which I'm doing more or than photography, and thinking of my two wide lenses: 28 f 2 asph and my 35 f 2 asph. I'm also thinking of the results produced by those mighty light weights. I've sold a number of editorial photos using those two lenses. Nothing wrong with progress but for now I'll stick with what I have.

Here New 35mm ƒ1.4 Lens from Leica Costs More than Your Car | Gadget Lab | Wired.com is a photo of the new 35/1.4 ASPH with the lens hood along with alot of "waa waa" about the price, complete with the apparent comparing of older used lens prices to the price of the new lens (and if the new 35/1.4 costs more than your car - well, your car must suck, lol).

I have the 28/2, which has a big honking (aka an effective) lens hood; the new 35/1.4 lens hood looks downright puny by compairson. Why the skimpy lens hood?

I don't understand Leica's aversion to providing a proper lens hood for this lens - and for some older lenses, such as the f/1.0 Noctilux, as well as others.

The main functions of a lens hood are to minimize oblique angle light striking the front element (for flare control/elimination), along with protecting the front element of the lens from damage. Neither of these objectives are well served by a skimpy, anemic lens hood - yet still the skimpy Leica lens hoods endure.

Yes, a bigger lens hood intrudes a bit into your angle of view. If you just move the canera around a bit before you make your exposure, you will see the part of the viewfinder that is obscured - problem solved.

This solution beats having an ineffective lens hood - IMO, at least.

Thoughts/opinions, please...

Do the filters go screwed on the hood or on the lens itself?

Do you have to put in first the filter and then the hood, or the hood first and then the filter?

(I refer to the Elmar 24mm).

I like these new hoods (the concept).

Well in talking about the 'new' 35 f 1.4 asph and its lens hood. Since I have not seen it or used it I'm not in a position to say, yes or no. I can only draw on my experience with my 28 f 2 asph and my 35 f 2 asph. Having used both extensively on the waters of Venice, I could not discern any problems. This likewise walking barely lit streets, no problem. Can you or someone buy or has bought the 'new' 35 set its shade up against the one from the 35. I know, f 2 vs f 1.4 bur it should give you a relative sense of size, etc. Curious.

Wilfredo,

NEVER tell your friends what you spend on camera gear... could ruin a great relationship.

leica lenses are likely to get more expensive without a bubble until people start taking out second mortgages on their lenses.

.

Sounds like a smart approach.

Wired doesn't look exactly a trustable source for infos about Leica...

"Leica has added a 35mm ƒ1.5 rangefinder lens to its digital M-series lineup. Previously, the only electronic 35mm to be had was the rather slow ƒ2.5 model..."

If I were my Summicron asph, I'd bring them to a Court... :D

Do they say something about the penis and the spider?

Want to buy the new 35mm Summilux in the UK ? Take a lesson in meditation, I suggest. Because, this is what a dealer has to say:

"The 50mm Summilux has a 7-month back order list at Leica Germany, the 35mm is not currently in production and Leica are not taking any more orders at this point in time. Unless Leica can quadruple their production capacity (which is never going to happen) it's going to be at least 4-5 months before we could get you any of those items, I suspect the 35mm Summilux won't be available for 12 months or more."

Got some cash to burn???? LEICA 35MM F/1.4 ASPH. SUMMILUX-M BLACK LENS #11663 USA NEW!

Meditation might also relieve one of the desire for this lens at this price... For me, the price alone relieves me of the desire for it but after I see what it does, who knows? I can honestly say that the current 35mm ASPH f/2 Summicron meets my needs and then some, so I am in the safe zone right now.

¡Out of here, Rubén! That's a different thread! :)

Or maybe you mean the famously Grimm fairy tale of the same name? :p
