ravinj Posted September 22, 2010 Share #41 Â Posted September 22, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Skate park with the X1...AF on a spot anticipating skater. Some shutter lag, still was able to get some fast action - this was not someone half running!! Â Nice. You should post in the photo forum.
Advertisement Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Hi ravinj, Take a look here Proof the X1 can shoot action. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
635djimmy Posted September 22, 2010 Share #42 Â Posted September 22, 2010 I found the X1 to work brilliantly at a local car event I went to, most of these cars were travelling at great speed too. Â Â Â Â Â James
jsrockit Posted September 22, 2010 Share #43 Â Posted September 22, 2010 With the X1, anticipation is the key... you cannot just pull it out of your pocket, turn it on, focus, and get the action... the action will be gone. You have to set it up and wait for the action. Not really ideal.

phancj Posted September 23, 2010 Share #45  Posted September 23, 2010 Look at the fishes jumping high and fast, the fisherman jumping and moving fast too, no probs taking this shot. To be honest some didn't come out as well as I had hoped lol, missing some completely... This was my first time doing it and I still have a lot to learn with this amazing little camera. It is still a shot where you can anticipate the action.
stephen.w Posted September 23, 2010 Share #48 Â Posted September 23, 2010 Some nice captures, but for me it's not about whether the X1 can shoot action more generally, but whether it can capture the exact moment that I want it to capture. It is here that it falls short. due to the shutter lag, lack of proper distance scale, focus continually being reset, etc etc.

Great images but IMO not a proof for an action proof AF system
RichardM8 Posted September 26, 2010 Share #53 Â Posted September 26, 2010 To me it seems as if shooting something that moves is confused with action shooting in this thread. Â Imo action shooting is capturing a moving subject or scene at exactly the moment you want it. As much as I love the X1, I don't think it's any good to shoot action. It is just too slow and action work is a hit & miss affair. You can get lucky and grab a good frame but that's something else.
phancj Posted September 26, 2010 Share #54 Â Posted September 26, 2010 IMHO, I would put the 35mm fixed lens as the limitation to say, shooting an NFL game or any sporting events at a distance without the need for some aggressive cropping. Otherwise, for everyday shots involving quick snaps and fast moving subjects, the X1 can deliver. Maybe nowhere near the speed of say a DSLR. But sufficient for most situations. Â Of course, the faster the better probably in the next model but right now, I do not miss the DSLR, and am I would say 95% satisfied with the X1. Â There are tradeoffs in everything. msbel Posted September 29, 2010 Share #57 Â Posted September 29, 2010 Leica and Rangefinders have always been about anticipation. Documentary photography is about anticipation, no matter what the gear. Same for the right light and day on a landscape of quality or candid expression for a portrait. Â Some of most famous supposedly random "action" shots (think HCB - think a puddle were all about anticipation and not pissing the wind. Some of the most iconic images ever (think Robert Frank) were shot with an M3, manually focused, and tracking or whatever you want to call it. Bottom line, you better know what is coming into the frame. Â Am I saying the X1 is an M? Of course not. However, if that is the way some of us have been shooting for years, then the X1 and having to deal with anticipation is not a big deal. I personally love that type of photography. Â If you want to shoot fast action at a sporting match or bird flight, then grab your tank DSLR and make it happen. Post it so I can see why they are better photos in composition, lighting, and well, instinct and skill. Â Some of the shots on this thread are well done, and that goes to the photographer's patience and instinct. Â Lucky? Always a factor whether you are in the studio or shooting blind from your waist. In this case, shutter lag (which can be shortened dramatically if you use the manual AE dials.) Â This thread has turned into just another X1 bash-fest (yawn.) Â Let's see some more interesting ways the X1 is capturing a motion shot. I don't even care if it's blurred if the effect of what you wanted was there. elansprint72 Posted September 29, 2010 Share #60 Â Posted September 29, 2010 Well, I've not seen a good action shot so far; keep trying folks. You really are making it hard for yourselves, like cutting the lawn with a pen-knife; it's always better to use the correct tool. Â I suspect that the X1 might work underwater, anyone want to try? Â The Palio ones would be good if you had got the horses in the frame, looks like you fired too early.
