M8 & the CV-15

I will soon have a pristine, very late model black M8. I would like to use my CV15 & have used that combo before, but without an IR filter. Is there an IR filter made for this lens? Does anyone have experience with this kit? Also, does anyone know which IR filters are best with the 35 Summilux, pre asph ( SN: 2992342 & the older 50 Summilux 50 (SN 1644071? Also, on average, when shooting wide open with the Luxes & and an IR filter, how much light do you loose? Thanks, Ben

Yes there is an IR filter that fits this lens - at least the coupled version. Check out the Robert White website for the details. they sell this lens with IR filter. I also got the coder from them so now it registers as a WATE 16mm. Just for your info I don't use an IR filter with this lens.

Ben, I have the 15 coupled version with a B+W E52 UV/IR filter on. A wonderful piece of metal and glass.

If you happen to have the old NOT coupled model, I know that John Milich was selling a filter holder for that 15mm lens which could mount some UV/IR filter size available on the market.

I did the same with my CV 12. Bought the Milich filter holder and mounted a B+W 489 IR bloking filter that works very well (Maurizio's suggestion).

Hope this helps, just ask Milich, but you can also write to Maurizio that know the issue very well.

Questions about the Summiluxes are way too complicated for may basic brain that scarcely helps me to push the shutter button :D

If you have the "old" CV 15 (SM with BM adapter) there is "rough way" (which I use), to solve the filter issue : take a standard E39 with a rubber band around the mount : unelegant, but works fine, and E39 filters are a lot easy to find.

The old Summilux 50 needs E43 filters, and the Summilux 35 with the s/n you quote is a bit complicated : afaik, only way to mount a filter is to have the two-pieces 12504 hood, which accomodates a series VII filter inside it. I have noexperience with IR filters (I suppose you refer to the "black" IR filters, not the UVIR for M8) : seem to remember you need around 8x-10x factor, but can be wrong.

Luigi, yes, this is for using the 2 older Summilux lenses on an M8. Do you have a different solution for that?

Ben.. welcome to the M8 side! I have little to offer in direct response to your questions except that the light loss with the filters has been, at least for me, negligble. I shoot low light very frequently, 35 older cron wide open, 21 rit pre, a "very" old ( 1970's ) 90 cron, cv 28 2.0 and a new 50 lux, and all perform stellarly - ONCE ADJUSTED for focus - on the 8. I look forward to seeing your images and your inimitable style with the new format. Best. Coos

Aren't all CV15s coupled? I've had the M version, which has a 52mm filter mount, but went back to the ltm version with no filter for smaller size, and closer focusing distance.

For Summilux 35 pre asphs, I use the 12504 hood with a BW 486 49mm UV/IR filter sandwiched in the hood (when I want to use it). For the E43 50 luxes, I used a 486 BW UV/IR, but this filter is a tad thicker than a Leica, so the original hood didn't fit anymore, but good aftermarket or maybe other hoods should work that screw in, or that can grasp onto a slightly thicker filter.

Thanks for all the input. I now have IR cut filters & hoods for my 2 luxes & have commenced firing. I'm now looking at ways to make the 40 Rokkor fixed with a hood & IR cut filter. I used the CV15 today & there didn't seem to be any issue, as I shot in the shade. I'll experiment some more. I find that in NYC, with the street work, I'm out of the direct sun almost all the time. Again thanks for all the sage advice. I love this forum & even some of it's members.:D

Sorry, can't help with the question, Ben, but had to tell you, I looked at your website photos and they are fabulous!

Ditto. "New York, just like I pictured it." I had the pleasure of living there for 40 years before moving to Hong Kong.

For the 15mm in screw-mount, I used a variation on the "rough" filter approach. Several layers of black photographic masking tape sliced thin wrapped around an E39 Leica filter and then wedged into the 15's built-in lens shade - worked for 2.5 years. I also got the Milich SM-to-M adapter milled for coding (and coded it as a WATE).

Ben,

I use a similar trick to Andy's, although simpler. I use 2 of those self adhesive rubber dots that are designed to protect polished surfaces from being scratched by stereos etc. I stuck one in the inside top of the hood and one in the bottom, carefully wedged the IR filter in between and it's been solid as a rock for 4 years or so.

One thing to be mindful of: before you put the filter in, turn it back to front so that the front metal rim prevents the filter glass from touching the CV 15's front element.

Pete.

Ben ... Also have the older 15 which does not take filters and have handcoded it as the 16-18-21 set at 21 without an IR filter and occasionally it bites me, but easily corrected in ACR. In fact I have one image with the corners green'ed out using the gradient tool (hue 113 satuartion between 13-25). I can just copy the settings from that image and do a paste, local adjustments onto groups of images in adobe bride. Unfortunately ACR will not save the local adjustments to a settings file.

You're photography is amazing, whether it's you or (I'm guessing your wife) Lynn, but the sitters are obviously having a good time, would be an experience to bump into you I'm sure.

Paul
