sanyasi Posted April 14, 2010 Share #1 Posted April 14, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I will be spending time with a relative this weekend who has asked me to shop with her for a point and shoot digital camera. I have never owned one and know nothing about them. The relative is a 78-year old bicyclist, who takes weeklong bike trips. Energetic, but not tech savvy. Photos will be printed at a drugstore or Ritz Camera. If she could get them 8.5 by 11, she would love it, but not her main goal. She might be willing to spend up to $500, but I suspect there will need to be a good reason to go over $350. Anybody have a recommendation? Thanks Jack Siegel

earleygallery Posted April 14, 2010 Share #2 Posted April 14, 2010 Take a look at the Leica Clux3 (or Panasonic equivalent - they're both the same basic camera, have the Leica branded lens but the Panasonic is less expensive - the Leica has the red dot of course and comes with better software and - I think - warranty). It's very compact, simple to use and light which is ideal for your friend to stick in a pocket or backpack on cycling trips and mine (a Clux2) produces fine A4 prints. stuny Posted April 14, 2010 Share #3 Posted April 14, 2010 I agree with james. However, some people will insist on having a viewfinder as well. In that case suggest a Sony since a number of them have Zeiss lenses.
ezc203 Posted April 14, 2010 Share #4 Posted April 14, 2010 I would say go for a Canon G11, or any Lumix counterpart to the Leica P&S cameras.

Walt Calahan Posted April 14, 2010 Share #6 Posted April 14, 2010 Panasonic or Canon. Both companies back great Point 'n shoot cameras. Comes down to personal taste.
MacSpikes Posted April 14, 2010 Share #7 Posted April 14, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ricoh GR-D I, II or III. Can't go wrong with any of these. Compact, rugged, easy to use, great lens and shoots RAW. What more does one need?

earleygallery Posted April 14, 2010 Share #10 Posted April 14, 2010 Making assumptions of course but we know the user isn't 'tech savvy' and will be getting prints made for her at a drugstore type outlet - so I'm guessing stuff like RAW is irrelevant. Simple, compact, but capable of good quality jpegs is probably what's required?

Simple, compact, but capable of good quality jpegs is probably what's required? Thanks to everyone who has answered so far. I've briefly looked at the cameras mentioned. I like the presence of RAW for me, but I worry that she might actually select RAW rather than jpeg. Then I will have to process the photos--something I don't want to do. I keep reminding myself: I am not buying this for me.

menos I M6 Posted April 15, 2010 Share #13 Posted April 15, 2010 I'd get a nice Canon PS - small (not a G11 for bike trips), nice little zoom lens, most easy, to operate, JPGs out of the box for printing at the drugstore. I love my Ricoh GRDs and must admit, the LX3 or Leica version of it do look very good (but way too much camera for the asking with way too little zoom). I bought two S780 for family members and they just shoot nice photos without asking for strange camera manual explanations.

Digitom Posted April 15, 2010 Share #15 Posted April 15, 2010 On a Leica forum? That shows that the Leica Portfolio is too small, so we have to have a look at other cmpanies! @ eddy (ezc203) I would not recommend the Canon G11 as a Point and Shoot! It is not so easy to handle IMHO. Maybe Leica C-Lux 2(!) is useful, more then the C-Lux 3 which turns on in the simple basic and so called "Heart mode" - means it forget all user settings after powering down. Not recommendable (and maybe out of that reason also out of production). X1 is not bad, of course but 1. see the price and 2. may be used as a P&S but then the real potential of this camera ist not used. I recommend still C-Lux2 or, as an alternative, the older D-Lux2 at ISO setting 100 and in the full automatic mode. C-Lux 2 can be purchases still sometimes at Amazon or Ebay new, and D-Lux2 in good condition for very good prices.
