Polarizer + IR Filters - Which Order To Install?

Hi All,

Please forgive another of my newbie questions.

If I already have an IR filter installed when shooting outdoors and wish to add a polarizer, should I be installing the polarizer over the IR or vice versa? This is of course assuming that the filter stack will be thin enough overall to avoid vignetting.

I did search some of the archives and there are some threads involving polarizers, but could not find a clear recommendation about the above question.

The lenses in question are either a 28/2.8 Elmarit ASPH or 35/2 installed on my M8.

Thanks for your help!

Rick

UV/IR-Filter on the lens and polarizer on the filter.

But be careful! Don't screw the polarizer completely in, and avoid using force to fix it on the filter. The polarizer may stick in the outward filter thread, so hat it is rather difficult to unscrew it again. There have been several threads about this with practical devices for unscrewing it, though unfortunately I can't find them anymore.

Unscrewing a stuck filter is an easy trick. Put the filter on a non-slip surpface, press down and unscrew. I use the rubber sole of a shoe (after ensuring it is reasonably clean) The point is that by gripping the edges of the filter you will deform it slightly, causing it to wedge tight. Doing it this way avoids that problem.

I have just taken delivery of the 24mm 1.4 Summilux. How do you use the UV/IR filter in conjunction with a polarizer on this lens (where the UV/IR filter sits between the lens and the hood)?

You can't unless you buy the special Polarizer adapter.

In my experience if you are using Leica lenses or Zeiss lenses the color saturation is so rich that you won't need a Polarizer. A Polarizer may be over-kill. I would experiment first.
