Screen Protection: Yea or Nay

Two M8's and an M9 later (3 years use), I am still 'protection free'. (I am resisting a pun attempt here ;) ). None of my screens are scratched and they don't get 'babied'. Of course, they are protected by my own StreetShooter when not actually shooting. Hands on use is still unprotected and trouble free, in my experience.

I am left wondering what other photographers are doing to their camera to get abominable scratches.

No screen protector on an M8 here either. Sapphire is a solution, even an expensive one and one that will make you wait for your camera to be serviced. So it is an upgrade only if you need to recalibrate it or service it. And if Wilson is right about the hardness of that screen, then there is hardly a reason as well for anything...

I guess you better wait and trust Leica for making a camera like a tank

I've been using the Giottos 8250 protectors on both cameras, they work very well.

Before that I tried the stick-on film protectors and they did the job too, though they often peeled off and they always seemed to reduce contrast or make the screen less bright. The best ones I found were actually iphone protectors cut to size, they were a bit thicker but still fairly clear and they stayed on well.

I don't baby my cameras but I try not to trash them either. I can say that when I first tried an M8 during their test-drive program I was shooting a routine assignment and managed to scratch the screen on the first day:confused:

So, screen protectors always seemed like a good idea.

Nay

Took an AC-MAXX off after a few days - couldn't see the screen well enough. All the talk here about non-sapphire concerned me initially, having not bothered with an M8.

An M is an extension of our hands which get nicked up too.

Scratches to my 9 are starting to accumulate which is fine, I've never babied M's (quell horreur!). Its more important to me that it be rugged and reliable - not a fashion accessory, trophy or virgin.

As with all new technology, the 9 has a short shelve life. I say use it to the fullest until the inevitable better next version comes out.

My 30 yr old M3 is plenty beat up - and works perfectly. That's what I expect from a Leica, not highest possible resale price.

8's and 9's will not be collector pieces anyway.

I'm looking forward to advances in sensor tech, especially at low light levels.

Happy with my ACMAXX, no issues seeing the LCD (aside from the quality of the LCD itself). No scratches on the ACMAXX either and I carry my camera low. I have a custom made long strap that keeps the camera next to my hip so it doesn't bounce around when I walk/run. I wear jeans with rivets etc and the combination of half-case and screen protector means my camera is almost mint.

I use the ACMAXX. I am satisfied with it, but a scratch pattern has developed from rubbing against a metal snap on the front of my jacket while walking around. The scratches are very fine and only visible from certain angles. I'm not happy about the scratches, but I would of course rather see them on the protector then on the screen itself!

I considered the Giotto, but decided that the clarity of multicoated glass was not worth the tradeoff of the possibility of the cover shattering, especially given the fairly low resolution of the screen itself.

+1 for AC-MAXX

sblutter Why did you remove it? And how? I read somewhere that if one uses heat to remove it there is a danger of pulling the M9 screen off the camera.

My M9 should arrive soon and I will use the AC-MAXX. I do not care if the cover distorts the image in the small screen. I do not look at every shot to beginwith and then only the histogram and not to chimp, I will do that when I load them into my Mac. I try to take care of my cameras as much as possible. They are too expensive to just throw around. If I do sell or trade them later they sure sell easier if they are in top shape.

ACMAXX after scratching my M9 on first day out. I never bothered for the M8 but immediately noticed I was worrying more with M9. Protection works well so far and I regret not ordering it sooner.

Per.

At first, I was not using one with the M8 and after a while, I saw very small scratches on the screen. Hence the protector.

ACMAXX after reading several threads here. Tried GGS but too greasy and was using ZAGG before, good too but less practical. Giotto was not available at the time of order.

+1 You made the post I wanted to make :)

Guys, a dumb question for you all, is the Giotto's SP8250 perfectly fitting the M9's LCD?

My guess is that it's a bit smaller, does anybody care to post a picture of a Giotto's mounted screen protector please?

thanks

The Giottos Aegis SP 8250 fits the M9 very neatly. Highly recommended

Here are some pics.
