Screen Protection: Yea or Nay

1. Who is NOT using a screen protector and why not?

2. If you are using a screen protector, what kind? Why that kind?

My three day old M9 does not have one yet, but I do have one I could apply. It's glass (or some sort) and it has something adhesive round the edges that adheres to the edges of the screen and helps it stay in place. Not sure the brand but I bought it last fall in anticipation of the M9 eventually.

BTW, I do have a Luigi case with hanging flap. I suppose one COULD make a (lame?) argument that such a case might be all that needed to protect screen, assuming one keeps the flap closed 95 percent of the time while out shooting.

Observations, practices, advice appreciated.

Giottos Aegis SP 8250. Made of Schott glass. Went on as soon as the M9 came out of the box. Better to scratch it than the OEM LCD cover.

Maybe a sapphire upgrade will be offered soon.

Absolutely, Rich. An excellent and almost invisible addition to the M9.

I tried the Giotto 8250 when I first got my M9 - after about 2 months one corner cracked and fell off, leaving a dangerous sharp edge, so I removed it. Now I just use Hoodskins. HOODMAN SUPER HOODSKINS 3.0-Hoodman Corporation

They come loose eventually, too - but at a replacement cost of $6 instead of $25. (actually - mine came in a pack of 12 for $20 - so even cheaper).

Giottos: I thought this was a little paranoid. I never scratched a screen before. This past weekend, I got home and the Giottos had taken a direct hit (probably my coat zipper). Looked like some of the coating came off of it, but the Leica glass/plastic was protected.

At first, I was not using one with the M8 and after a while, I saw very small scratches on the screen. Hence the protector.

ACMAXX after reading several threads here. Tried GGS but too greasy and was using ZAGG before, good too but less practical. Giotto was not available at the time of order.

Yes, I do use a screen protector. It is called a Luigi Crescenzi halfcase. It doesn't fray at the edges. It doesn't fall off. And I can remove it completely when I don't want it.

Also, it protects the camera, not just the screen.

The material of the M9 screen seems more scratch resistant than the original M8 one. Pre-sapphire, I used a Durasec Hi-Tec self healing protector on my M8. OK but degrades the already mediocre LCD even further. After 5 months, my M9's screen has none of the fine polishing marks that my M8 screen got, so I think I will just not bother. No doubt, Leica will be trying to sell me a sapphire screen in the near future anyway. If they offered an upgrade to say a 700,000 pixel OLED screen, I might be interested but probably not otherwise.
