gib_robinson Posted March 29, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 29, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I need to buy a couple of SD cards that will work in my M8 AND in my M9 when it arrives. The Leica Camera website recommends Sandisk 16GB Ultra II cards for the M9 rather than the newer Extreme III cards so I have two questions: Will the Extreme III cards work in my M8 and M9? If they do, is the extra speed worth the extra cost? Thanks, --Gib
Advertisement Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 Hi gib_robinson, Take a look here SD Card Recommendations. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted March 29, 2010 Share #2 Posted March 29, 2010 I cannot discern any extra speed, but yes, they do work.
Shade Posted March 30, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 30, 2010 My blue sandisk (standard) doesn't have much difference (if any) compared to my extreme III 30mb/sec... And yes, it's compatible up to 32gb from the latest fw update.
Bill W Posted March 31, 2010 Share #4 Posted March 31, 2010 Can anyone recommend a reliable dealer in the USA for purchasing the Ultra II 16gb. I have looked on ebay but can you trust they are not fakes?

Bill W Posted March 31, 2010 Share #6 Posted March 31, 2010 Let me ask another stupid question. Is there a diference between Sandisk Ultra and Ultra II? Other than the labeling, they appear the same. B&H has them for $49.95 and Adorama $64.95.

If they do, is the extra speed worth the extra cost? Thanks, --Gib The latest SDHC large memory cards from SanDisk are simply called Ultra (and carry a Class 4 label or sometimes say 20 MB/sec), or Extreme (Class 6 or 30 MB/sec). Ultra II's and Extreme III's are slightly older. Since catalogs are not completely accurate, check the picture as well as reading the text. I use Amazon as a source, since they tend to offer several suppliers at several prices at any time. I wouldn't go to EBay. I've measured write speed on both types. The M9 and M8 write to the Ultras a little faster than to the Extremes, but you can upload from an Extreme faster than from an Ultra. The write speed matters only when you fill the 7-shot raw buffer. I don't think the Extreme is worth the up to 2x increase in cost, if you only plan to use the cards in an M8 or M9. scott
