vyc Posted March 25, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 25, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi folks, I'm putting together a presentation for my photo club on "street photography." I'm planning to cover the following topics: • History / background • Legal aspects of it • What makes good street photography • Tips and Tactics Of course my initial research led me to HCB and some of the other recognized greats, and I plan to cover them in the "history/background" section of the talk. But wondering if you can share some of your own links or pointers on the subject. I have combed through hundreds of forum posts and threads here on the L-camera-forum (including the thread in which taping methods for "stealth" were argued, for example). I feel that my searches have been exhaustive, so I'm looking to tap the collective for *new* insight that hasn't been covered in threads here. Anything you share would be greatly appreciated, even if it's as simple as "here's a great street photographer's portfolio -- check it out!" Thank you! vyc Posted March 25, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted March 25, 2010 Winogrand's on my list! I've got a list of folks who are good at street photography and who I intend to provide a brief background on. Good to know I'm on the right track by having him nominated again here. I've got about 20 on the list so far. I'll upload the presentation online and share it here when I'm done. Thanks for the pointer to the vimeo video series, mati.
Jeff S Posted March 25, 2010 Share #5 Posted March 25, 2010 iN-PUBLiC | The home of street photography And, for a small investment, Sean Reid's site includes an essay on street photography, as well as other insightful essays, besides the equipment reviews that he's well known for on LUF...http://www.reidreviews.com/reidreviews/articleindextable.html Jeff
vyc Posted March 26, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted March 26, 2010 Just subscribed to Reid's site. $33 for two articles is pretty steep. Hopefully it's worth it!
Jeff S Posted March 26, 2010 Share #7 Posted March 26, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I don't think you'll be disappointed, especially if you have a general curiosity about photography beyond your specific project (and art in general). I encourage you to read all of his essays. I bet many of them will provide useful information for you. And, to put it in perspective, a magazine subscription costs about the same, and offers far less IMO. Also, for buying gear, his equipment reviews are among the best...no marketing hype; just practical guidance from a real photographer. Even his article on rangefinder cameras (not in the essay section) includes lots of general information on cameras often used by street photographers. Check back in and let us know how things work out. Jeff PS I noticed that one of your topics regards the legal aspects of street photography. This is a hot topic, especially since 9/11, and varies by country and location. Check out the Bar section of the forum, for example, to see what's going on in the UK. You can also Google tons of related articles.
vyc Posted March 26, 2010 Author Share #8 Posted March 26, 2010 Thanks for the reassurance, Jeff. I'll definitely read all of the articles to get my money's worth. I do have an interest in broad photography subjects and the idea of an unbiased camera review is very intriguing. =) I have combed the threads here for legal stuff and have some really good content to pore through on that front, including: Legal Information : Street Photographers Rights PhotoSecrets The Law For Photographers -- A FREE Online Book
Jeff S Posted March 26, 2010 Share #9 Posted March 26, 2010 Your first link appears to be specific to Australia. Again, Google is your friend (not just a forum search, but the Internet)... Manolo Laguillo Posted March 27, 2010 Share #10 Posted March 27, 2010 There is a very interesting conversation between Joel Meyerowitz and Colin Westerbeck about street photography in the book they both made years ago. Meyerowitz, before going color and 8x10, began as a B/W street photographer, and went for some years, in the early 70's, with Winogrand out to NYC's streets to photograph. Don't miss that text! Just bought this book: Clive Scott: Street Photography. From Atget to Cartier-Bresson. I.B. Tauris 2007. Accademically written, it follows the path from 19th Century painting to photography. alun Posted March 28, 2010 Share #11 Posted March 28, 2010 As Manolo said, BYSTANDER by Joel Meyerowitz and Colin Westerbeck is pretty much the definitive text on street photography, its history, its schools and evolution. It will provide you with loads of other pointers, photographers, sources. Joel Meyerowitz : Photographer
