cfc247 Posted March 23, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 23, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) When the Dlux4 was first introduced, Leica called it the Son of M8. I got one of the first ones available in the US and used it for about a year. Though I enjoyed the camera in many respects, in its design and operational character, it was not even a remote cousin to the M8. After shooting the X1 for a day, with the CV 35mm finder, both in AF and MF modes, I must say that it was the closest thing to shooting with my M8 in a smaller package. Sure the RF and manual lenses on the M body is faster and more precise. But the X1 is great for its size and ISO performance. The files are robust and the operation of the camera was extremely fluid. It was a good thing I picked up that extra battery though! Advertisement Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 Hi cfc247, Take a look here X1, the Son of M8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stephen.w Posted March 23, 2010 Share #2 Posted March 23, 2010 'Son of the M9', perhaps? Or how about 'Love child of Leica and its yet to be disclosed far eastern partner'?
mhoersch Posted March 23, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 23, 2010 Son? I didn't even know the M8 was married!
jsrockit Posted March 23, 2010 Share #4 Posted March 23, 2010 I can see both sides of the coin here. Sure, it can look like an M8 or M9 with the rangefinder cut off. However, it does not feel like the M8 I use at all. I think it is Leica's attempt to make a digital barnack, which I think is a smart move in the long run. If they choose to continue with the X as a camera line in the future, I think it could be very exciting.
cfc247 Posted March 23, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted March 23, 2010 Perhaps I should clarify. I should have used quotes for the phrase "son of m8," since I was making an allusion to Leica's advertisement to the dlux4 when it was introduced. The dlux4 was nothing like an M in any way, except for the red dot. If any Leica camera should be called a "son of M8," it should have been the X1. That was the only point:)
Guest Posted March 25, 2010 Share #6 Posted March 25, 2010 After shooting the X1 for a day, with the CV 35mm finder, both in AF and MF... the operation of the camera was extremely fluid I must have done something wrong at the dealer and during the1 hour around town he generously allowed me with the X1. I consider after more than 2 years of use the operation of the M8 just fluid. Wish I had a buddy who could lend me a X1 for a whole day or that there was an arrangement to rent it for testing. Untill then I'll cary on with M8. Cheers!
grober Posted March 25, 2010 Share #7 Posted March 25, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Voted with my feet: I sold all my Leica M8 kit two months after the X1 was announced. I had to wait four+ months to actually get my pre-ordered X1 but I have no regrets. -g

The more I get comfortable with the X1 the more I am wondering what place my M will have in my shooting arsenal, though I'm not ready to dump it just yet. Guest Posted March 26, 2010 Share #9 Posted March 26, 2010 While it's good to allways answer in the most polite way, sometimes the message of the post gets unnoticed. It was your statement that the operation of the X1 is extremely fluid that made me express my disagreement - maybe in a too subtle way. Cheers! Guest Posted March 26, 2010 Share #11 Posted March 26, 2010 I'm extremely surprised to hear of anyone abandoning their M for an X1. Why not? The more the better. Nothing worse than digiMs unused in drawers. Of the 40k M8s 10k might reach the 2nd hand market from those who get an M9 this year and next. Wy not have another thousand (second hand M8s from people) who thought an M Leica is the right thing, but actually wellcome something smaller, easier to use, can take their time and don't mind occasional oof (out of focus) pics and like it that a little flash's popping out sometimes, which for true...is heresy . imo young (and older) photo enthusiasts don't care who sold them an M8 that they can afford now and this is good for everybody loving RF photo (and keeps the red dot guys in business ). Widening the customers base only with people queuing up to spend for an M9, while some are chatting about the new villa by the golf course, the golden quarter-pounder for the wrist, the sports car etc. is very acceptable for me, since I don't think recession talk all the time is good for you (or the economy). But second hand M8 owners reinfuse some of the good old Leica spirit. Cheers!
jsrockit Posted March 26, 2010 Share #12 Posted March 26, 2010 I'm extremely surprised to hear of anyone abandoning their M for an X1. Me too... the M is my main camera, the X1 is a suplemental camera.

I guess I was saying that if you would try the X1 and shoot with it for a period of time, you might think otherwise. Realistically, I don't think an hour in the store will give you an idea of what the camera is capable of in the field. Struggling to know and see how the camera works and whether it fits your shooting style takes time imo.
diogenis Posted April 2, 2010 Share #14 Posted April 2, 2010 Here is how both cameras compare: If you want compact, light, flash, great quality, no lens but AF go x1 If you want tanked but still compact, simple and intuitive use, big collection of lens, amazing quality go M8 Both can make quality shots, both focus with precision. Simple?

Digitom Posted April 3, 2010 Share #16 Posted April 3, 2010 I'm extremely surprised to hear of anyone abandoning their M for an X1. Well, maybe that is a big PRO argument to buy an X1. Or it gives us an impression where the future of the M System is - maybe parallel to the classic M viewfinder cameras (which will be built as long as enough customers want it!) to set up another system with ELV (like Oly Pen 2, but integrated) and interchangeable lenses and the possibility to adapt the M-lenses also. With a price for the camera body which is located between the M9 and the X1. Would be nice... At the moment I think -if I see the price of a used M8 together with a 28mm lens compared to the price of X1 with grip and viewfinder- there would be no reason for me to change from M8 to X1 (unfortunately I have not both, I still love my D2 )
