GMB Posted March 20, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 20, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) No Leica bashing here and whining, but an honest question. I have not yet updated simply because of lack of time. So far, with my lenses I have not experienced the red edge problem (the 24 2.8 seems to work fine). The long formatting time is not an issue for me--I do not format in the field. Also, the somewhat longer waiting time for preview, while not ideal, is not a big thing either. Some users seem to have some rather annoying experiences with the new firmware. So I am seriously asking myself the question whether I should simply stick to the old firmware. (Note, I have updated firmware for the M8 several times without problem so I know that this is normally a simply and smooth process).
Advertisement Posted March 20, 2010 Posted March 20, 2010 Hi GMB, Take a look here FW--to upgrade or not to upgrade?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
scott kirkpatrick Posted March 20, 2010 Share #2 Posted March 20, 2010 So far I have not been disturbed by any of the differences cited between how things work in 1.16 and how things have worked since the M9 shipped with 1.002. The improvements in review speed, format speed, (possibly) writing speed are significant. There were 3 or 4 situations that could hang up the camera if you did some things in a non-standard order -- all gone now. The red edge corrections and profile improvements are an evolutionary thing, and there seems to be agreement that the direction is the correct one. I can't see any reason not to upgrade. scott
Ario Arioldi Posted March 20, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 20, 2010 I did it and I would do it again. I see only advantages vs only one very minor issue (auto shut off in viewing mode). Cheers, Ario

R9user Posted March 20, 2010 Share #7 Posted March 20, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) +3 I did and would again, the benefits far outweigh the negative (which I have not experienced in my day to day use)
ianspector Posted March 20, 2010 Share #8 Posted March 20, 2010 I am delighted with the updated firmware. The zoom function works instantly and whilst the highest level of quality is not instantly available, it does now allow an instant assessment of focus. Thus one can zoom in immediately and see if the edges are sharp. This is such a great benefit to me as I am still shooting the world at f/1. I have never been troubled by red edges on my 28mm Cron, and I can always find something to do whilst the card was formatting but the thumbnail improvement was far better than I dared hope for. yanidel Posted March 20, 2010 Share #11 Posted March 20, 2010 I am a bit mixed on this topic. Spent the whole day shooting and the fact that the pictures take a second to sharpen up on the preview is very annoying.
jaapv Posted March 20, 2010 Share #12 Posted March 20, 2010 So you prefer to wait even longer until they appear?

I am confident that it would take shorter for the firmware upgrade than it took for you to write and submit this thread. The new FW is a winner, quit making excuses and upgrade'r. bybrett Posted March 20, 2010 Share #15 Posted March 20, 2010 + whateverIt's a huge improvement. There is an improvement in the quality of review... however there are new bugs and an 8 second wait for the image to render sharp.
chris_tribble Posted March 21, 2010 Share #16 Posted March 21, 2010 There is an improvement in the quality of review... however there are new bugs and an 8 second wait for the image to render sharp. My strategy is to use the excellent "Preview only with shutter release pressed option"... This may not speed up preview sharpening, but it stops me from chimping, will extend battery life, and means I only review as a conscious decision (almost always to check the histogram).. I've also found that if you zoom this retains the preview until you press the shutter releas again - something I've found useful. Overall, I'm very happy with the new firmware. Yes it's a useful feature. With M8 you can review say for for 1 second and press the PLAY button to retain the image showing if required.
ArtZ Posted March 21, 2010 Share #19 Posted March 21, 2010 On the M8 you can also keep zoom preview (size and position) when you press "PLAY" + left/right arrows to see the previous/next picture. Very useful thing
