Henry II's Keep at Dover Castle has the most wonderful stone spiral staircases. It's amazing to think of the number of feet that have walked these stairs since the Keep was built in the 13th Century.

Dover was my first stop in England after collecting my car at Heathrow, and after the flight from Sydney, I was rather tired. I booked to go on the WWII tunnels tour, but spent a bit too much time in the Keep and in my rush to get to the meeting point, went the wrong way and ended up on the northern side of the castle, and so missed the tour! The next available spot was too late in the day, so I missed seeing the tunnels and the hospital. Next time!

Ian -

Beautiful light, shadow, colors, textures and shapes. Please note that the spiral stairway in fortresses wind the way they do so that defenders backing up the stairs have their bodies protected by the center wall, and only expose their sword arms, while the invaders must expose their entire bodies (unless they are left handed).

Thanks for the positive comments. Stu, I didn't realise that about the direction of the spiral - since I'm left-handed, I must be best suited to 'Onward and upward!' - either that or 'backwards and downwards'!

With best wishes for Christmas,

Ian
