ijporter Posted December 17, 2006 Share #1 Posted December 17, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Henry II's Keep at Dover Castle has the most wonderful stone spiral staircases. It's amazing to think of the number of feet that have walked these stairs since the Keep was built in the 13th Century. elansprint72 Posted December 17, 2006 Share #2 Posted December 17, 2006 Ian, Beutiful control of light in a difficult situation. The underground excavations here are unbelievable, not sure how much of it is open to the public. Cheers, Pete.
andybarton Posted December 17, 2006 Share #3 Posted December 17, 2006 This is superb. The control of the light is terrific. (BTW, there's a whole WWII field hospital underneath Dover Castle)
ijporter Posted December 17, 2006 Author Share #4 Posted December 17, 2006 Dover was my first stop in England after collecting my car at Heathrow, and after the flight from Sydney, I was rather tired. I booked to go on the WWII tunnels tour, but spent a bit too much time in the Keep and in my rush to get to the meeting point, went the wrong way and ended up on the northern side of the castle, and so missed the tour! The next available spot was too late in the day, so I missed seeing the tunnels and the hospital. Next time! Ian
stuny Posted December 17, 2006 Share #5 Posted December 17, 2006 Ian - Beautiful light, shadow, colors, textures and shapes. Please note that the spiral stairway in fortresses wind the way they do so that defenders backing up the stairs have their bodies protected by the center wall, and only expose their sword arms, while the invaders must expose their entire bodies (unless they are left handed). harmsr Posted December 18, 2006 Share #6 Posted December 18, 2006 Ian, This is wonderful light and a very intersting angle for the composition. I would love to see more from this visit if you have time to post them. Thanks for sharing. Ray

ijporter Posted December 18, 2006 Author Share #8 Posted December 18, 2006 Thanks for the positive comments. Stu, I didn't realise that about the direction of the spiral - since I'm left-handed, I must be best suited to 'Onward and upward!' - either that or 'backwards and downwards'! With best wishes for Christmas, Ian

stuny Posted December 18, 2006 Share #11 Posted December 18, 2006 Ian - I too am lefty and therefor thought I'd be better suited to attack rather than defence.
jmr Posted December 18, 2006 Share #12 Posted December 18, 2006 Ian, I just love shots like this - and this is a really fine one. Thanks for posting. PS - I'm left-handed too.
ijporter Posted December 18, 2006 Author Share #13 Posted December 18, 2006 Tis good to see the fellowship of left-handed persons is alive and well in the forum - after all, we are the only people in this world who are truly in our 'right minds'!
