I know I called it "horrible" flair, but that was a poor choice of words. I like the flair too, but this is an extreme example of what a uncoated filter can do.

My filter is a B+W 486 UV IR CUT MRC F-PRO, so it's coated, but i did not use the

lens shade/hood, and got the sun straight in the lens, so it would have been flair no matter what, but as i stated earlier, i like it so what the heck, hehe...

Your filter was coated? Well, in that case it shows what shooting directly into the sun with any filter can do.

BTW, I have noticed in almost all the situations of extreme backlighting, there would be no harm, from an IR point of view, in removing the filter. In other words, rarely is the magenta color shift effect an issue while shooting into bright lights at night. If flair reflections are an issue, just take of the filter!

OK....I know that I am about to get murdered, but please tell me what is do great about the photos? Yes the dog is really interesting...but, please, don't hold these photos to be an exemplar of excellence from the M8....flare, etc. You could have done the same work ( or better ) with one of the Nikon Cool Pix credit card models for $4500 less....sorry...OK....now start to hit me....

Ok, i'm specially interested in how you achieve the same kind of bokeh with that kind of camera...

There is no bokeh with those pictures....say what you will...done now since I really would prefer not to start or perpetuate an "angry thread". For what it's worth...I have multiple Leica cameras, and multiple M and R bodies which I have been using all of the time for the past 30 years. No-one has to convince me that Leica lenses are superior, and that, in the main, the Leica film bodies work wonderfully well. However, I am simply not yet convinced that the images taken with the M8 are superior to those taken with other digital cameras that I have seen, espeically the higher end Nikon and Canon SLR models. Almost all digital images look great on the TV monitors, and I would, one day, really like to see on this site, side by side comparisons of images taken with one of the credit card Canon or Nikon cameras versus those taken with the higher end Nikon and Canon cameras AND the M8. Ken Rockwell, hardly a basher of Leica or film does indeed-on his site- compare images taken with various Canon credit card cameras and those taken with the higher end Nikon and Canon models. Surprise! In many instances the much less expensive model does as well or better then the higher end SLR models. Now lets see what the M8 does against these very same Canon point and shot cameras with images posted on the TV screen...please note the last caveat. I sincerely hope, as a very dedicated supporter of Leica, that the Leica M8 images surpass those of the Canon credit card cameras at moderate size enlargements. And, FWIW, I do have an M8 on order...:}

Not going to comment on Ken Rockwell here...that should suffice in my opinion of him.

There are significant differences in image quality from P&S digitals to DSLR's - it's all in the glass and the user. Sure, you can take nice little snapshots with Canon 5D or Nikon D200 and they might be indistinguishable from a high end P&S by the same manufacturers - but so much more comes into play when using DSLR's & good grade glass. DOF, contrast and color rendition are things that stand out in my mind.

The thing one gains from using high speed glass on say an M8 or whichever DSLR body you choose - is the ability to creat OOF areas right from the start much easier than say a $500 Cool Pix or cell phone camera. No need to go overboard in Photoshop to do this. What I can do with the Noct or 'Lux alleviates alot of post processing lunacy when it comes to my final image. Not sure I can achieve that look with an Elph.

I'm starting to see some nice work from the M8 - is it blowing my mind yet? No - and I honestly didn't expect it to. Pro level gear should perform reliably and give the end user the result he expects from his investment in glass - this applies to any manufacturer, not just Leica. What I'd like to see from the M8 is it's ability to use the Leica glass in a way that I'm used to seeing with my film bodies.

Why bother critizicing in the first place if you do not want to make

this another "angry thread"....?

I could'nt care less what you think about mine or any other photo's for that matter..

And just for your information, every picture created with parts of the subject out of focus

have "bokeh" since "bokeh" is just a fancy word for " out of focus area's"

Hope the M8 (when you get one) will hold up to your Royal Standard's, and we

will probably then finally see some "High Quality Images"...

Best Regards
