Best fast lens for M8 under 1K - Any suggestions?

It depends what you mean by "best". Sharpest, most appealing bokeh, least vignetting, smallest, least chromatic aberration, most 'classic' looking photos, least focus shift?

For example, the 35/1.4 Voigtlander is sharp wide open but has a reputation for focus shift. The Canon 50/1.2 has no focus shift but isn't as sharp. The Leitz Summarit 50/1.5 produces a classic look.

Since you're looking for sub-$1,000, my suggestion would be the Voigtlander 35/1.2 Nokton, which has a lovely look of its own with appealing bokeh imho, no focus shift problems, is very sharp wide open and stopped down, but is large compared to, say, a Leica 35/2 Summicron.

Matthias,

You have some truly beautiful shots there:):) but a couple show up the 35/1.4 Nokton's problems with flare.:(

Pete.

cheers pete, i appreciate getting kinda feedback.

I know, yeah, but I'm fine with that. for me my leica and the lens are simply an instrument to express me. mostly i bought it because of it's size and it's simplicity. i don't care pretty much about technique or super-sharp, flareless images. that's why i don't see why i should buy a summilux asph. 35mm for almost 10 times more of the cv's price.

and also don't see why i should pay 1000 bugs for a summilux 35mm pre-asph, if it's pretty much the same as the cv and the only significant difference is the name on it.

i don't get that at all. if i can get a good zeiss or a cv, why should i pay that much more for a leica lens? for sure it makes perfect sharp flareless images. but i don't need that. and i don't want that. i like mistakes. that's how life is. it isn't perfect. and that's what i want to show in my photos. so i think also the camera and the lens is part of a photo and that's why it isn't neccessary to have a perfect lens. to me it isn't.

for me it's simply a lens. and a lens should do it's job.

and i don't mean it offensive to you guys who can afford buying a 3300€ lens.

i cannot. and that's why i think like that.

but i got your point dude! and i know what you're talkin about...

cheers,

mat

Thanks to all for your suggestions, truly appreciated. Sounds like i am hearing some pretty good things about the Voigt 35 1.2. Looked around briefly and it seems like everyone is sold out online B&H and Adorama so far... Will do some looking around later on.

Size does not matter to me as this will probably not be my everyday lens, i like Pete's suggestion for the 35mm 1.2 which is primarily what i am looking for, also heard about the flare problems on the Voigt 35 1.4 which is also a nice lens at least judging from Matthias's images. I have also read reviews on the Voigt 50mm Nokton 1.1 another fine lens also priced well but don't need that range as i already own the Summarit 50mm 2.5 which i love very much but not fast enough in Leica language i suppose, 35-40mm would be a perfect range.

Does anyone have links to photos shot with the Voigt 35mm 1.2 ?

Once again thanks to all for your suggestions.

Maybe you can find the nokton available at CameraQuest.

Here and here there is a couple of shots taken with this nice lens. The only problem as they told you is the size, but performs in a beautiful way for a very reasonable price.

How about a CV 40/1.4? The one I have has no focus shift, and no distortion, works very well with the original M8's 35 framelines, which means you'd want one modded (original CV 40/1.4s brought up 50 framelines).

The 1.4 bokeh under some circumstances can be a tad distracting, but often it's just fine.

Dear K I,

I am using a Voightlander 35 mm f1.2 on my M8.

I like it. I bought it new and online for about 750 Euro, as far as I remember.

I am using it as a everyday-lens. My other ones are a WATE and a Noctilux. Yes, it is a bit bulky, but I do not mind. I also do not mind flares - as our friend here said, that's life. I think it is a solid, sharp, nice, fast lens - for everyday-use. The pictures in my collection are post-processd of course. Vignette added and colors intensified (Lightroom 3 Beta) - but that's another story. I like the lens!

You can see a number of examples here:

Thanks to all for the suggestions, photos and links... I truly appreciate it. I think i am sold on the 35mm 1.2 judging from the images i have seen from all of you, i love the character of the 1.2 the best. I will be purchasing/pre ordering the lens today and will be posting shots on my blog soon as i have it.

Once again, many thanks to all for the advice!

KI
