daleeman Posted February 26, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 26, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am a Leica User There are a few of us in the world of photography who have high expectations of our ability to create art, capture life in a fraction of a second and look to use exquisite tools to paint with light man’s reflection upon this earth. Within this high expectation of my abilities I also have high expectations on my own behavior as a polite and supportive communicator with my fellow artists. Exhibit exemplary confidence in my suggestions to help other artists grow and share their successes. We Leica users may not have a creed to live by but I hope you feel as I do that we can be exceptionally supportive rather than very dismissive here in the forum. I’m sad to see so many poor and petty snipps at each other in the one definitive place I come for support of my art by better understanding of my tools. So if I were to say, “I am a Leica user” would you understand how I hold myself accountable to a higher standard than just anyone with a camera and an opinion that dismisses others opinions. I hope others here might claim this honorable title themselves so that threads do not turn into childhood playground quarrels, rants and disrespectful posts. So, are You a Leica User Too? PayPerView Posted February 26, 2010 Share #3 Posted February 26, 2010 I'd like to be a Leica user but my newly acquired Leica is at Leica for repair. I guess Leica themselves don't necessarily hold themselves up the some of the standards of their fans. But I am pre ordering an M9...so what do I know anyway? bill Posted February 26, 2010 Share #4 Posted February 26, 2010 Hi Lee, Whilst I laud some of your sentiments, Leica ownership is neither a vocation nor a religion. The price of entry to the "user's club" is the purchase of a tool for taking photos - no more, no less. The price of entry to this forum is, rightly, less than that - you do not need to own a Leica to post here, only to have an interest in Leica. The converse is therefore true - any muppet with money can own a Leica, and many do. It does not make them a better person. Like any community we have our malcontents and misfits. We have trolls, contrarians and armchair ceos here who frankly should have better things to do with their time. I think the important thing is to contribute to the best of your ability and knowledge and to not fall into the trap of treating people any differently over the internet to how you would in the real world. Those who neither say nor do anything positive simply show that they are not fit to be part of this community, and call into question by implication their ability to socialise anywhere. Guest BigSplash Posted February 26, 2010 Share #6 Posted February 26, 2010 I am also a Leica user and have never owned another camera (except iphone and cheap digital compacts in the early days). I have the highest regard for all that is Leica since I was 5 years old when I dreamed of owning one. I now have several and a bunch of lenses that I prize. I actually use my equipment to take photos and even recently won my first ever photo competition. I bought a M8 last June and have since taken 2500 images with it, plus I have started using my M6 film camera again. I have redsicovered photography in all its forms, and I enjoy most of what I read in this forum. I also hope that the Leica company will succeed, grow and be around for many decades to support my hobby with new kit plus repair my old kit. Unfortunately Leica has had and still has financial difficulties so the future of the company continues to be a question mark although the M9 could be a chance for great things going forward. When I see difficulties caused by or not addressed by Solms I reserve the right to be constructively critical. I would hope that other forum members would be supportive of this. I would like to see Solms embrace constructive critique and use it for continual improvemnet of the brand, the products, and the company. Most companies would be grateful for such inputs and use it to be client centric and driven. Personally I dispair when some members feel the need to be openly hostile, make personal attacks and behave in a juvenile way without adding constructively to the OP or ensuing debate. It is a real problem that unfortunately the moderators either do not see (and that is bad) or do see and choose to ignore and that is IMHO worse. Typically such attacks are provoked because someone has dared to suggest product improvements, identified the none availability of product, or have identified a quality or after sales support issue. I wish these people would curb their behavior and add value by addressing the issues raised by the OP, or the subsequent debate and avoid personal attacks. Throwing insults around and referring to people as "trolls", or "armchair CEO's", or identifying them as "muppets with money" IMHO does little to rise the level of the debate and should not happen. I am off to take some photos wih my Leica in 100mph wind with blue skies and lots of sun.
andybarton Posted February 26, 2010 Share #7 Posted February 26, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Perhaps, gentlemen, we are confusing "Leica User" with "Forum Member". In the pie-chart-of-life, these are not necessarily one and the same thing. Can we at least try to keep one thread civil and on topic? Thanks. LuxBob Posted February 26, 2010 Share #10 Posted February 26, 2010 Daleeman, Basically agreed. I would like to do my best to make the World a better place. Compared to many I am not so good but I try my best. In doing this, I write, photograph, and help my company achieve its objectives, which I hope leaves a positive footprint. I use Leica, Nikon, Mac's, PC's, cars, bicycles, humor and good manners whenever I can. I find that a smile and a word of encouragement go a long way. Overall I think things are getting better and life is well worth living despite what some newspapers and doom mongers would have us believe.
lct Posted February 26, 2010 Share #11 Posted February 26, 2010 ...if I were to say, “I am a Leica user” would you understand how I hold myself accountable to a higher standard than just anyone with a camera... I'm just anyone with a camera and i feel OK like this but i don't mind your higher standard at all. You will prove it in your hundreds posts to come undoubtly. earleygallery Posted February 26, 2010 Share #12 Posted February 26, 2010 Lee, I'm all for keeping things civil but your post does come across as rather snobbish to say the least! Just because one uses an expensive camera doesn't make one a 'better' person - in the same way that there are some real w**kers out there who live in big houses in nice areas and drive Bentley cars. I wonder what you think a Leica user should look like! I use Leica as well as several other brand of camera - I don't become a different person if I use my Bronica or Canon for example. As I've said in other threads - a good barometer for forum posting is ask yourself if you would happily say the same thing if you were with those people in person.
