SP0 Posted February 25, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 25, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I need to send my M9 and all its lenses from the UK back to Solms for focus adjustment. Leica have been very helpful, but I'm stumbling a bit on what type of shipping to use. Have any other UK users solved this one? Parcelfarce is what I use most of the time but their compensation maxes out at £2.5k which is hugely below the value I have to ship. I looked at a few others but they were very expensive indeed. I can ship via Leica UK but they only have shipments twice a week and I still need insured shipping from home to them, with the same problem. Thanks for any experience/advice on this. Advertisement Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 Hi SP0, Take a look here Insured shipping UK -> Solms ?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
gabriel Posted February 25, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 25, 2010 Why not send your equipment to Solms via Leica Milton Keynes or the Leica Shop in Central London. They then look after all shipping issues including insurance. I have a feeling that the Leica Service Department in Milton Keynes can arrange to have your equipment picked up and returned by their courier to your home but you will have to confirm this with them
wattsy Posted February 25, 2010 Share #3 Posted February 25, 2010 I have a feeling that the Leica Service Department in Milton Keynes can arrange to have your equipment picked up and returned by their courier to your home but you will have to confirm this with them Leica UK have never offered a pick-up to me but a few recent postings suggest that they will arrange it if you insist. I recently used the Mayfair shop to get an M9 to Solms and they seemed pretty efficient but I appreciate that is not much of an option if you live far from London. marknorton Posted February 25, 2010 Share #4 Posted February 25, 2010 Last time I sent anything to Solms was 2 M8s and 5 lenses by DHL, uninsured. They're fine but avoid sending around the time of a public holiday in the UK or Germany which allows an extra day for the package to kick around the depot. Insurance is expensive though, about 1%, which is clearly playing to the customer's anxieties.
250swb Posted February 25, 2010 Share #5 Posted February 25, 2010 If anything needs to go to Leica I just take it into my dealer and they sort it all out and phone me when it comes back from Solms. Its far easier than worrying about sending it yourself, if you have a dealer near enough that is. Steve
alun Posted February 25, 2010 Share #6 Posted February 25, 2010 My M7 is at Solms at the moment. I didn't send it direct -- i sent it by Special Overnight Deliver (Royal Mail) insured at max. value. Perhaps you could do this -- although to secure adequate insurance cover you'd have to split the consignments.

Overgaard Posted February 25, 2010 Share #8 Posted February 25, 2010 I DHL road (trucks) from Denmark which is two-three days and then insurance is usually 1% of the value with a max (10,000$ or so) per parcel. So you can divide the parcels up in more than one so as to avoid to hit a limit. 1) book online via credit vard at https://www.dhlitnow.com/tws where you can also see the prices. 2) Before you pay, call them and ask for a code (I save 30% that way) 3) pay for shipping, print the labels and pack the gear. You can email cs@leica-camera.com from the DHL site that it's on the way. 4) Leica always ship back at no charge and with insurance. I normally aren't concerned about insurance, but when sending to the "Leica Camera" address it's just to obvious it's not 2$ worth of plastic parts for printers. SP0 Posted February 26, 2010 Author Share #9 Posted February 26, 2010 Thanks for these helpful suggestions. On a whim I called my insurer (Towergate Camerasure) and it turns out that my policy covers "goods in transit" which includes sending them abroad by courier! So it seems that I can avoid paying 1% to a courier company, which as others have noted is very expensive.
SP0 Posted February 26, 2010 Author Share #10 Posted February 26, 2010 2) Before you pay, call them and ask for a code (I save 30% that way) Can you expand on this a little? Not sure I understood what code to be asking DHL for.
Overgaard Posted February 26, 2010 Share #11 Posted February 26, 2010 Don't know if it will be on the Uk site, but it was on the Danish. When you finalize the booking and is about to pay you can fill out a rebate code if you have one. I didn't, so I called DHL reception and asked for one - and got one without any hesitation. And using it reduced the prices with 30% before checkout and payment.
Shadow Blaster Posted February 26, 2010 Share #12 Posted February 26, 2010 For what it's worth I have used US express mail for sending lenses to Leica US and Robert White UK without insurance. I rely on the tracking number if there would be a problem. I think full insurance would be prohibitive. I haven't had any problems at all. I would be interested to know if Leica dealer, etc. pay to fully insure their packages. John S.
