C1 - 4 for Mac is unstable

My conclusion after more than a year of use : C1 4 for Mac is unstable.

C1 3.7 was stable/ C1 4 is quitting at every session.

No other app has

the slightest problem in my iMac — except the infamous Word for Mac,

notoriously a piece of garbage.

C1 enters now the same scarse family of apps quitting without any reason

whatsoever on aperfectly clean/maintained machine.

I suspect C1 developers to bypass the Mac platform as so many developers

still do.

Wait for 5 more years and they'll regret it… or change.

Having not 5 years to wait/lose, I'm not sure I'll keep it for long.

Yes.

C1 is the only app quitting like this. Really maddening.

I use everyday Aperture, RAW Dev, CS3, LR2 and LR3 beta

(that's for phoyo only), and never have any problem with them.

Which I did when installing SL.

Don't see why I would do it again and lose my precious time to correct a faulty app…

I used to believe Microsoft when they advised, shamelessly, to do so,

knowing perfectly well their Office suite is utter crap on Mac (and maybe

so on PeeCee).

C1 support replied they did not have any solution…:D

Did you send Phase One the CrashReporter log for Capture One?

Have you run the Apple Hardware Test that came with your Macintosh? It could be that only Capture One causes a bad section of your RAM to be in use, because none of your other applications uses as much memory.

I did report the Crash log to C1.

I ran the AHT.

And my iMac is clean as a baby : recently been tested on site by Apple support,

after installation of a new screen (and yes, problems with C1 were here before and after

the latter…)

Johan,

First, since I have Windows (Vista 64 and Win 7 64) I'm only speculating once more...

I have to believe that most MF / Phase users actually run C1 on Macs without the kinds of trials you're having, since Macs are widely used in advertising and high-end photography support, etc. If C1 was this flaky, no-one would be using it....

This leads me to the conclusion that there really is something amiss with your Mac.

Have you done a low-level diagnostic on your installed memory?

C1 is not a "glutton" when it comes to memory, but it is extremely picky about the quality of the memory itself, and does not do well with marginal RAM.

Every single time I've had an issue with C1 quitting on me prematurely (which is exactly twice now) it's been due to faulty physical memory. Swap out the memory: voila--no more C1 problems.

Note that I'm talking about memory that performs most functions. Memory that has a slightly higher error rate that some applications can simply accommodate. Memory that apparently runs most office productivity apps with no issues whatsoever. It's just not "good enough" for C1.

Now, this may not be important enough to you to chase down; in all seriousness, if your other apps work ok then what's the problem? C1 is the problem... :)

But seriously: if you haven't done the low-level memory check, this could be the cause of all your problems, and on the off-chance you could one day lose an important document or hours processing in some other raw program, I would check this first.

By the way, I wouldn't expect a repair depot to do this unless you tell them too explicitly.

Maybe it's time for a memory upgrade? You could always get more while you're at it :)

Jamie,

I appreciate your time and answers.

C1 support told me they did not have a reply to this.

Apple Care changed the screen of my iMac which had dirt on it from factory.

When they did so, they tested it. I doubt it has a memory problem, but you're

right, as it's still under Care, I'll double check my memory with Drive Genius

and AHT. Still, the fact that no other app has that kind of problem leaves me

doubtful. Besides, my experience is many people have problems they don't

necessarily report, by lack of time or negligence. So, I may be not the only

one (as the late John Lennon sung).

Johan, in this case I believe you're wrong, though--I don't hear any complaints about C1 crashing on the Intel Macs from my MF pro friends, and they would tell me :) Anyway--Drive Genius will tell you absolutely nothing about your RAM, and here's what wikipedia says about AHT:

"Apple Hardware Test While the Apple Hardware Test CD or DVD that comes with every new Mac includes a memory tester, it is widely regarded as inadequate. Many machines with real memory problems will erroneously pass the tests done by the Apple Hardware Test."

So I would get a real 3rd party low-level application or just trade in some new RAM and see... it can't be that expensive, can it?
