cbretteville Posted February 23, 2010 Share #21 Posted February 23, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) We pay 25% vat on the invoice total incl shipping cost pluss a flat handeling fee unless the value is below 200 NOK (~£22). We don't pay vat on books including those imported. Duty we pay on very little. I import a lot of stuff as a private person and have never been charged anything but vat. Life would, in this respect, have been a lot easier if Norway was an EU member. Carl
Advertisement Posted February 23, 2010 Posted February 23, 2010 Hi cbretteville, Take a look here Import taxes importing private used gear from US to EU?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!

You would pay VAT at the rate of the EU seller's country instead but you would pay VAT anyway i'm afraid.
xjr Posted February 23, 2010 Share #23 Posted February 23, 2010 You will pay vat for the country you are importing into and based on the sales value shown on the invoice. So make sure the transportation fees are shown separately. In the UK it will be 17.5%

I'm fully aware of that, but generally the vat in EU countries are lower than here. There is also the handeling fees they add to calculate the vat and the delay it causes. Also on sales that are vat free e.g, comission sales in Germany I would save quiteca lot. Carl

I used to buy in Germany when the VAT rate was 15% there. Now at 19% it is close to the French one (19.6%).
plasticman Posted February 25, 2010 Author Share #26 Posted February 25, 2010 Living in Sweden, pretty much everywhere else is cheaper for me. This attitude is called 'looking on the bright side'.
tdtaylor Posted March 5, 2010 Share #27 Posted March 5, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) On the flip side, does anyone know what is involved buying a new lens in the UK and shipping it to the US- it would be greater than the $2,000 limit for informal entry. I have been through the US customs site and at this point am totally baffled. At this point, it is about 22-24% cheaper to buy in the UK vs. the US. Any help or advise would be appreciated. Thanks,

Last year, due to the favorable exchange rate, I imported two lenses from the UK and paid no import duty whatsoever, much to my relief. The shipping was not exactly inexpensive, but it was still a very good deal - so go for it!
