luigi bertolotti Posted February 13, 2010 Share #21 Posted February 13, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) About the filters (I don't use flash: no advices about): on M8 the UVIR filter is, to be clear, a MUST in many taking situations : the M8 sensor, for technical reasons, is prone to give a magenta cast to a number of colored surfaces: it happens strongly with fabrics (expecially with balck and blue ones) but also with foliage, grass and similar: the UVIR filter (also referred to as "486 filter" by manufacturers) corrects this dominant: the problem has been solved with M9... but for your Summicron 35 is surely better you buy one: is a vailable from Leica and other manufacturers like B+W and Heliopan. A WA lens with UVIR filter, in turn, needs a correction to the edges that is performed by a in-camera firmware which, on M8, is activated when the lens is recognized by its 6-bit code (engraved on the surface of the bayonet mount) and setting on the menu the option "lens recognition ON+UVIR filter" : check the lens you order: if it's a new one the code is surely present... if it's a used, it could be absent, but on the Summicron 35 asph it can be added by Leica service and also by 3rd parties. I see in your site (compliments) that you are devoted significantly to BW... the "UVIR" issue in this case is less significant, but for a correct tones' management is better anyway to use the filter. jaay Posted February 13, 2010 Share #22 Posted February 13, 2010 you might want to hold off an expensive lens as we are expecting the announcement of a new 35mm summilux from leica soon! this would be perfect for your M8 and a great investment as they keep their value well and will also be perfect for a future full frame M you may buy! Get second hand CV lenses from ebay to try out so someone else has already suffered the initial price drop.
PayPerView Posted February 13, 2010 Author Share #23 Posted February 13, 2010 On a tear obviously as I have some travel coming up and want to have everything or as close to everything ready. Can anyone help me decide on the Leica Telephoto 90mm f/2.0 APO Summicron M Aspherical Manual Focus Lens (6-Bit, Updated for Digital) - Black USA B&H # LE9020MB Mfr # 11884 Price :$ 3,695.00 0r Leica USA 90mm f/2.5 Summarit-M Manual Focus Lens (Black) 6-Bit Coding B&H # LE9025MBMfr # 11-646 In Stock Price:$1,695.00 I am sure these kind of comparisons have been done many times. I do not yet have a very good grasp on the differences with the Aspherical. I do prefer a lighter lense if possible, not to mention lighter to the wallet. THoughts appreciated as usual. I am dominating this section today... THanks for reading and all the help I have received thus far! Mark
PayPerView Posted February 13, 2010 Author Share #24 Posted February 13, 2010 Great stuff as usual. Will look into the IV filter..it's not a simple screw on like a UV, I suppose? I already ordered the 35.20 but got it preowned at a good price. more later it;s 514am! good night all! and thank you for the warm welcome here! luigi bertolotti Posted February 13, 2010 Share #25 Posted February 13, 2010 90mm is a classic Leica focal, but remember the crop factor... is a 120mm equivalent on 24x36, and uses the smallest frame into the Viewfinder... Leica makes also 75mm (exactly as 90, there is a Summicron f2 and a Summarit f2,5, which I have), a focal that many people like a lot onto M8 (is a 100mm 24x36 eq.) Summarits are significantly less costly and lighter than Summicrons : general opinion is that if you can renounce to f2 is a savvy decision to have a Summarit, which can be fully appreciated also wide open; to be precise, Summarits have another "minus" towards Summicrons, that is the absence of an embedded, retractable hood : it's an accessory you have to buy separately (not costly) and screw onto the mount, making the lens longer than Summicrons when stored/carried (you can live with it....) In general, considering your possible lenses' lineup, think well to your possible decisions about M9... is a full-frame and this can bring to a lenses' set that, switching from M8 to M9, could result not optimal : 35 is a no-issue, but, as you see, the 75-90 alternative could be one... for instance, if you think to have also a Wideangle (which 35 is NOT, on M8) on M8 you have naturally to think to a 21 (=28), which is a focal that, on M9, is surely appeciable but already in the "strong WA" zone... in general, this could be a reason for choosing some unexpensive Voigtlander... waiting for M9 to decide your "definitive" lens set ("definitve"... for there is a sort of addiction you can observe in many Leica users... they are always thinking to "the next lens I could buy"... )
wstotler Posted February 13, 2010 Share #26 Posted February 13, 2010 I can see that and ordered this: Leica Wide Angle 35mm f/2.0 Summicron. Mark: Welcome to the forum. Good choice. Nothing to dislike about the Summicron 35mm ASPH as a first lens for the M8. Saw you're looking at the 90mm lenses. Weight is an issue for you, and the older 90s can be large, but this is a case where you can pick up an "old" 90mm lens used and try that at a fraction of the cost of a new piece of glass. (I bought a 1964ish 90mm BGN lens that was beautiful when it arrived.) The quality, even on the older glass, is quite good, when stopped down to f/4 or f/5.6. The older lenses are soft (compared to modern glass) at f/2 and f/2.8, but this has largely been a "feature" for me. Has a glow to it. Have a look at KEH: Leica M Fixed Focal Length Lenses - KEH.com It is likely that you will need a 1.25x magnifier to assist in nailing focus, so factor that into your price. I got the Summicron 35mm ASPH first and then picked up a new 50mm Summicron as my second lens. Something to think about. Great for portraiture. (I use the 50mm with the 1.25 magnifier, BTW.) Neither lens has disappointed me. There are days I wished I'd have saved up and gotten the Summiluxes, but the CV Nokton f/1.2 35mm takes care of my urge for very shallow DOF shots. It's a very large lens for the M8--although not so big compared to Canon or Nikon glass. Some 90mm shots: Summicron 90mm (1964) - a set on Flickr Some 50mm shots: Summicron 50mm - a set on Flickr Great stuff as usual. Will look into the IV filter..it's not a simple screw on like a UV, I suppose? I purchased and have used a B+W 093 "full IR" filter. It does not let visible light pass through--IR only. It is an E39 thread and fits my Summicron 35mm and 50mm, my 135mm f/4, and my CV21 (where it lives today). Tricky to shoot with until you have the focus zones nailed. A few shots here: Infrared - a set on Flickr Only buy an eveready case if you feel you need it. It protects the camera but also inhibits access. I agree 100% with Jaapv. Half-cases are very popular and a good idea for protection, grip, and general feel. PayPerView Posted February 13, 2010 Author Share #27 Posted February 13, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks for the welcome. I am excited (to say the least) to get my M8 and 35mm 2.0 lense next week! I'm also excited to finally get a Point and shoot camera. I ordered a Panasonic LX3 a few days before considering Leica but want a Digilux 4 for some reason..haha. I've really gone off the deep end and am in trouble...Not only am I in danger of becoming a Leica shooter and getting a M9 but I have been reading about the S2 and it's scaring me! My new gear should be all in by the end of next week! Thank you all for bearing with such a newbie to the Leica world!

PayPerView Posted February 13, 2010 Author Share #31 Posted February 13, 2010 It's been suggested to get a viewfinder magnifier...and i see there are two available.. 1.25 and 1.4x Any comments on the use of these is appreciated.
jaapv Posted February 13, 2010 Share #32 Posted February 13, 2010 I used to use them in all the morphs available- for my eyes worse than useless. Correcting the viewfinder with the appropriate diopter is vastly preferable in my opinion. Other eyes may have other needs.
Rick Posted February 14, 2010 Share #33 Posted February 14, 2010 I think that jaapv and I have come to the same conclusion on the magnifiers. I'm not a fan of their poor optics and find that I do better just focusing for best contrast in the patch. I think you will love the 35 cron. Good choice. And, if you get an M9, sounds like you will then you will have a classic combination of FF and 35mm lens. Enjoy and welcome to the ward.

I have high hopes for bonding with this camera and as I keep posting, the M9 will be ordered as soon as I am sure this is for me! For that reason, I won't buy lenses (probably) for the M8 crop but rather with the M9 in mind. But it's all conjecture at this point. Just when I thought I was 'finished' with gear...I have a complete kit of Canon lenses and bodies...I don't expect the Leica to replace it at all but for street photography and who knows what else is is such a tempting package. Stay tuned!
Logic108 Posted February 14, 2010 Share #35 Posted February 14, 2010 I think once you have tried one Leica lens on the M8 you will want to try them all or a tleast get a nice kit. In my opinion Leica lenses are pretty equivalent across aperture range so the thing to check is whether or not you will need f/2 or f/1.4. My kit for the M8 is - CV 15mm II, Elmarit 24mm and 50mm 'lux. This year I will add the 35mm Summarit and 90mm Summarit. So the 50' lux is my outdoor low-light lens and I think it represents excellent value. At the moment I don't shoot low-light indoors but if I did I would probably opt for the Nokton 35mm f/1.2. This GAS thing is really tough but I think it is important to know two things - 1. what focal length is good for you. 2. Where and when you will use these focal lengths i.e indoors at night or outdoors during the day etc - this is maybe the most important point. So build a kit around possible usage situations and not just because everyone says this lens is better than that lens etc etc.
jbgeach Posted February 15, 2010 Share #36 Posted February 15, 2010 35 cron is amazing, the only problem is that once it is on your camera, it just doesn't seem to want to come off . I also have a CV 21mm (small and cheap) and also have a 50 summicron pre ASPH. If you use a 21 on the m8, you really don't need an accessory viewfinder, it almost approximates the entire viewfinder if you look to the edges. Sometimes I think I could use a 75. I don't think I have ever wanted a 90. Anyway, have fun and good luck getting that Summicron 35 off you m8
Johnny_Johnson Posted February 15, 2010 Share #37 Posted February 15, 2010 If you use a 21 on the m8, you really don't need an accessory viewfinder, it almost approximates the entire viewfinder if you look to the edges. This must really vary with the individual. I wear glasses and can barely see the 28mm frame lines. I'd have to use an external finder even with a 24mm lens. Later, Johnny
jbgeach Posted February 15, 2010 Share #38 Posted February 15, 2010 Johnny, I agree, when I have glasses on it is more of a trick, but with my contacts (which I use most of the time) I have no need for an accessory viewfinder
PayPerView Posted February 17, 2010 Author Share #39 Posted February 17, 2010 Well, first the good news! My M8 arrived today! Very very exciting as I know you all can relate to! The bad news.... I DON'T HAVE A LENSE!!! I ordered the camera 3 day air but when I ordered the lense from another company, I saw it was being shipped Priority Mail...thinking this is a fast service.... ...unfortunately I just checked and see it will be delivered by the 25th of February... It's taking all possible self control not to just go to B&H and get a different lense that I know I will be using on my M9, assuming the M8 is going to be a camera I love. I love the feel, build quality, layout and simplicity of this camera. It's exactly what I have been wanting and .... you all know the deal! I know this camera or even the M9 will never (probably never..lol) replace my Canon 1DS3 but will fit in perfectly for street photography, travel (along with the 1 series).. So frustrating not to have a lense...arghhh I am hoping for a miracle and the lens arrives faster than the 25th of the month. "Priority Mail" what a misnomer! PayPerView Posted February 17, 2010 Author Share #40 Posted February 17, 2010 I am almost embarrassed to admit it but I could not resist and ordered: Leica Summarit-M 90mm f/2.5 90/2.5 Got a good deal on it and expect it to arrive soon.. Anyone have an M9 for me yet?
