...of buying my first M8 in a month or so.

I read lots of problems with this camera from shutters exploding to coffee rings on the LCD to this and to that. I also see tons of amazing shots from this camera.

Is this £2250 gonna be well spent on an Ex-Demo camera? Should I opt for a used camera for about £1700?

I want this camera soooo much but I am a wee bit nervous.

I've been using it for two years and a half now and never had a problem.

The M8 is got some electronics, problems may occur sometimes, as on any other devices.

Be thrustful it is an outstanding tool and will give you impressive pictures.

Hi Megadust,

Most members here would advise to go with the camera that has a warranty. So the ex-demo should come with 12 months full warranty, which might help to take some of your nerves away.

I bought an ex-demo M8 not so long ago and have loved every single minute I have spent with it since.

Go for it!

Hoaxville is right. I have not had my M8 long, no problems, but I bought it new - one of the last new M8s in UK so I have a 2 year warranty.

That's peace of mind.

If the demo camera is UK based, you may find you get a 2yr guarantee in the box, rather than a 1 year - worth checking out.

Remember that forums are often the place where people go when they have a problem with a product, so it's possible to get a distorted view of product quality. All I can say is that I'm delighted with mine and my Nikon DSLR is feeling under-used, poor thing.

Cheers

Mike

Thanks for your replies to this. I think I will defo go for an Ex-Demo model if I can still get one!

I tried out the M9 in the Leica Shop in London a few months ago and really loved it, so I know the rangefinder camera route is the course I am heading.

If you can afford the M8 with a warranty, I would go for one of those. When I bought mine, I had to buy the cheapest one I could find. It only came with a 30 day warranty. I had some initial problems with 4gb cards and a third party battery (it came with the camera and I had no idea it was third party until months later)... but once I got a Leica brand battery and I stuck to 2gb cards (even with the newest firmware), all has been lovely. However, no warranty could mean an expensive repair is in my future.

Dear Megadust,

I bought an ex-demo m8 here in the US in late November from a dealer. I Use it with a new 28mm Elmarit lens.

It has worked perfectly.I have an extra Leica branded battery and am using SanDisk 4,8, and 16 MB cards with no trouble. The camera has 2.004 firmware ( I think ).

I also use a D-lux 4 for PS and have a six month old Nikon D90.

The M8 is a perfect walk around camera. I use the d-lux 4 when I just want something for my pocket and will not be shooting outdoors in bright light. The D90 sits in its bag.

Whatever bugs the camera had initially seem to be resolved.

Good Luck and Enjoy !!

I bought mine new 6 months ago, i use it a lot and have had no problems. If i were you though, i would try and get an M8.2 with warranty and the upgraded shutter, for more peace of mind.

My M8 makes me extremely happy, strange but true, i would go for it if i were you.

Get the longest warranty that you can.You may get lucky and never need it, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Get a camera with a warranty by all means, but whatever you do GET ONE!

I was very dubious for very long, but since getting an M8 last year I've been having the best time with any camera I've ever had. I genuinely have an emotional relationship with the camera - something I thought was impossible with digital.

You're gonna have a ball!

I've put ~1000 exposures on mine since getting it 6 weeks ago. It is a late-run M8, still under warranty. I also bought an extended warranty on it from a Camera Shop. Hopefully, will never be required, but is a piece of mind. At the end of three years, I'll probably pick up an M9 to go with the M8.

I am really liking this camera. I have used Digital SLR's since 1993, which is a long time! This camera is just more fun to use.
