sanyasi Posted February 8, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 8, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, I answered to quickly to the "No Problems" post. I received my M9 on Friday, it worked nicely on Saturday and Sunday. Today, it died. The LCD is blank. I have swapped memory cards, batteries, and lenses to troubleshoot it. Just dead. The dealer is understanding and will get me a camera as soon as possible, but I am wondering whether I am missing a troubleshooting step or doing something stupid. Thanks--and amazingly enough, I am still in a surprisingly good mood today. Jack Siegel
Advertisement Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 Hi sanyasi, Take a look here Dead M9. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Jerry_R Posted February 8, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 8, 2010 Mine got only once dead. After removing battery and inserting once again - it came back to live. Good luck!

JeffreyTotaro Posted February 9, 2010 Share #5 Posted February 9, 2010 Try leaving the battery out overnight and see if it comes back to life. Something about an internal battery that will drain overnight might clear whatever error is causing the trouble.
sanyasi Posted February 9, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted February 9, 2010 Just as an update, after a day of trying different combinations of lens, cards, batteries, and bottom plate/grip, the problem is recurring and unpredictable. The camera is boxed and will be shipped back today. I have been promised a new camera as soon as one is available so all is not lost.
ho_co Posted February 10, 2010 Share #7 Posted February 10, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sorry for the problem, Jack, but I'm glad you updated the forum on the status. I hope the replacement comes through quickly!
sanyasi Posted February 10, 2010 Author Share #8 Posted February 10, 2010 s another follow up: I am not a mechanical person--I like gadgets, but don't know how they work--I suspect that the problem is either firmware related or that there is a contact between the bottom plate that is not solid. NZDavid Posted February 10, 2010 Share #9 Posted February 10, 2010 We can't forget that these are computers, not cameras in the traditional sense. Exactly. Nobody is surprised when computer software doesn't work. We almost expect it to be unreliable these days. No matter what the product. Brake or steering stopped working on your new car? It's only the software, sir. Get a patch and it will work fine -- until the next time. Seriously, this kind of thing is very off-putting -- considering or M8 or M9 costs several times as much as a film Leica.
menos I M6 Posted February 10, 2010 Share #10 Posted February 10, 2010 I am 3 days into using a Leica M8.2. Today, I got my first "dead Leica syndrome" (which I knew about, reading the forums extensively). Switching the camera on and off did not cure the problem. The SD card was removed, as I downloaded the images. When I put the bottom plate back on, the camera made a warning beep and displayed the missing SD card warning. This was the only sign of life. After switching batteries, making the camera on and of in no particular order, the camera came back to life eventually. I did not remove lenses during this "reanimation". The digital Leica seems not as bullet proof regarding it's computer innards as products from players, who are longer in the electronic camera game than Leica. Good luck with your camera - when in doubts, bring it into the service.
Jerry_R Posted February 10, 2010 Share #11 Posted February 10, 2010 Come on. Is it SOFTWARE, when HARDWARE is not willing to start? Let's not make excuses! Leica level of complexity in terms of software - is much much smaller than Canon and Nikon. And Sony, Panasonic, Olympus, etc.

mhoersch Posted February 10, 2010 Share #14 Posted February 10, 2010 Just as an update, after a day of trying different combinations of lens, cards, batteries, and bottom plate/grip, the problem is recurring and unpredictable. The camera is boxed and will be shipped back today. I have been promised a new camera as soon as one is available so all is not lost. Well, in the spirit of the "no problems" thread you could write: "Absolutely no problems so far, apart from the camera going dead after two days." Sorry, I couldn't resist. I can imagine how you feel since I've had my share of problems with M8s. I do hope you'll get a working camera soon and can start enjoying it... ArtZ Posted February 10, 2010 Share #15 Posted February 10, 2010 Well, in the spirit of the "no problems" thread you could write: "Absolutely no problems so far, apart from the camera going dead after two days." Sorry, I couldn't resist. I can imagine how you feel since I've had my share of problems with M8s. I do hope you'll get a working camera soon and can start enjoying it... I think Leica forgot an important thing in the M9: a mouth to pour a glass "snaps" (Germans love "snaps" followed by a good beer) from time to keep the camera alive and to ressuscite if needed :D
rosuna Posted February 10, 2010 Share #16 Posted February 10, 2010 I can imagine how you feel since I've had my share of problems with M8s. I also had and have... My M8 has been away for... I can't say, several months in total, during the past three years... She likes Germany.

I do hope you'll get a working camera soon and can start enjoying it... The camera will be working soon because I shipped it back to the dealer yesterday and I will be getting a new one shortly. "The imagine how I feel" is interesting. After waiting and the build up, you'd think I would wanted to throw the thing against the wall. Never had that sense. I just laughed and last night took my old trusted DSLR to photo the big snow storm we had. Now if it happens again...
jklotz Posted February 10, 2010 Share #18 Posted February 10, 2010 I had an interesting problem this morning. Camera was shooting as normal, but was recording a black frame:confused: No, I did not have the lens cap on. It would meter and shoot as normal, just recorded a black image. I tried removing battery and card, no change. Finally, I reset the camera in the menu to "stock" settings, and now it's back to life. WTF?
lct Posted February 10, 2010 Share #19 Posted February 10, 2010 .... After waiting and the build up, you'd think I would wanted to throw the thing against the wall. Never had that sense. ArtZ Posted February 10, 2010 Share #20 Posted February 10, 2010 She likes Germany. Rubén, usually is the other way round... Germans like Spain especially the south and the islands (Ich möchte ein Voucher für zwei Wochen Urlaub auf den Kanarischen Inseln, bitte!.) :D Otherwise there's a new girl at Customer Service, Solms, Gabriele Arnold who is very nice, helpful, loves Spain and speaks Spanish... Maybe dealing with her directly can help you to get your M8 sooner
