A cow eating grass

Yogi Bear would show a blank piece of paper to BooBoo.

"It's a picture of a cow eating grass"

Where's the grass?

"The cow's eaten it all"

Where's the cow?

"Do you think that the cow would hang around if there was no more grass to be eaten?"

The truth is that it had all gone by the time the X1 had actually snapped the picture.

probably as long as you jsprockit so his analysis on the camera is as good as yours.:)

Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah... though you are right. However, I will make my assessment after using the camera, not from text on a screen.

you already have made a heap of assessments on the X1, the forum is full of your comments here unless you have been pissing in the wind:D

marcg does not have an X1 if you read his posts, its strange the folk who knock the camera but dont own one

(I haven't got one or seen one - but from all of the reviews around, surely what you have found out is hardly surprising.

Mostly if one criticises the X1 on this forum one is met with reproaches -... )

Most of us are pissing in the wind no? It is what the internet is good for... I just meant that I won't know if it is too slow for me or not until I use it. Additionally, I won't get it out of my head until I use it. I'm kind of stuck.

That's correct that I don't have one. It is correct that lots of people who dont have one, knock them. It also correct that lots of people who do have them knock them too.

I've gone through probably most of the reviews of the X1 which are available on the Web - and certainly those which have been flagged up on this site.

They are all unanimous that the camera is slow, the IQ is very good and that if you want to get round the speed of the camera, you have to work-around - and even then you aren't certain to get what you want.

These reviews are intended to be relied upon by people who are considering forking out a lot of money for it.

The only people who don't really give us the raw truth about the camera are Leica - and yet they are the people who certainly know all about it. (Of course, it is very understandable because they want to sell it)

I have a sense that Leica, which was once upon a time, the photographer's close and trustworthy friend, has realigned itself with its commercial interests. It used to share those interests in common with its photographer customers, but I don't think that it does any more.

I think that a lot of people will be sold into buying the X1 - simply because it is Leica and they want to own one - or even worse, because it is a Leica and they trust the company not to let them down.

I think that the company is letting down its client base - certainly on the X1 (- and to an extent it did so with the M8 and the M9 where it relies on its reputation and goodwill of its client base to sustain loyalty while it tries to sort out the technological and delivery problems which appear to be very prominent right now.)

I think that one proper function of a forum such as this is to have very open and frank discussion of points of view so that possible Leica X1 customers who are lucky enough to get here before they actually spend their money can understand all of the issues very thoroughly before they decide what to do with their money.

Also, if Leica follows these pages then hopefully these discussions will be a warning shot across their bows because, when it comes to digitising their cameras, Leica are doing a sloppy job

I do not quite understand your issue with the X1. Do you mean to say that there used to be a non-digital X1 which was markedly faster than the about-to-be-sold digital X1?

Well, if that floats your boat.

Who are the lots of people who have them that knock them. there are only a few issued at the moment.

If the knockers of this camera want to do is street photography then get an SLR or stick to what you have . No one is insisting you have to buy it but the X1 is a compact camera with very high image quality it is what it is

I don't have an X1 and I probably won't be getting one. But MarcG --- do you have an M9? Your comments are off the mark on that camera, which I do own and which is superb (even if not perfect; what is?).

Or are you one of those who will reflexively trash Leica without regard to the merits?

Just as bad as those who cannot admit that Leica is not perfect in every way.

As soon as I get mine I plan to post an extensive comparative analysis of the X1, Panasonic GF1, Nikon D90, and Ricoh GXR, centering on their ability to capture fast moving and fast chewing cows. For those whose primary interest is street shooting I plan to find cows in city streets. From all I've read I expect that using AF to capture shots of cows racing through city streets may be difficult with the X1. But still, even just getting a little bit of a tail may be an interesting shot.;)

I messed around with the GF1 today and it kills my E-P1 in the AF department. The GF1 is very quick... it even seemed faster than the D60 I used mess around with. If Leica put that AF in the X1, wow... dream camera complete.

Some day there will be cameras that are, for all practical purposes, perfect. These cameras will involve no compromises, and no skillfully-made design and engineering decisions involving trade-offs. People will use them to photograph our graves, which will be supporting the growth of an interesting and highly-photogenic lichen population.

The GF1, with its outstanding 20mm lens, is available at Amazon for $1,000. For probably 90 percent of photographers who want a high-IQ point-and-shoot, this is the better camera.

I've still got the X1 on pre-order for two reasons: the X1 will ultimately delivery better quality images and the X1 is so much more sexier looking than the dorky GF1. Aesthetics - both in the image and camera body itself - are important to me.
