Mostly if one criticises the X1 on this forum one is met with reproaches - it's one redeeming feature is picture quality. Picture quality is important but it isn't the most important. Composition and focus have to be more essential than no. pixels and even colour rendition out of the camera. Great photographers can make great pictures with a disposable camera. But a disposable camera is fast and in focus. You don't lose the moment. What is the point of having great IQ if your composition has just walked off the stage. I bought an LX3 off eBay for just over £100. It does everything the X1 does - and slightly quicker, I expect. I also bought a 24/2.8 from a dealer for a very good price. The whole lot cost only marginally more than an X1. I expect that once the rush of owning a Leica camera has worn off, that there will be a lot of disappointed X1 owners out there - assuming that Leica does actually sell a lot. I expect that it is going to become a lifestyle accessory and to a certain extent, this seems to be where Leica is pitching itself nowadays. RayBans, Aquascutum, Giorgio, Porsche blah blah Leica. (Sorry if these are not the current must-have labels, I'll leave that to the label freaks to sort out)

My half hour with the X1 echoes Andy's experiences exactly. Guess who was walking into the frame when I shot this... Welcome, dear visitor! Guest Bernd Banken Posted February 7, 2010 Share #8 Posted February 7, 2010 When I remember well, it was Nikon who made an ad with the tail of a cheetah disappearing out of the frame on the right side..... So Andy, your idea isn't new......
jsrockit Posted February 7, 2010 Share #9 Posted February 7, 2010 I bought an LX3 off eBay for just over £100. It does everything the X1 does - and slightly quicker, I expect. Come on... please stop. It does not do everything the X1 does and it is not quicker. There are people who already own and use both and have said they are comparable in speed. You can diss the price, but this crap about small sensor P&S shoots beating the X1 is nonsense.
SJP Posted February 7, 2010 Share #10 Posted February 7, 2010 What I would like to know is how the X1 performs on manual, 5 meters & f/5.6 or similar hyperrfocal like setting it terms of shutter lag (presumably it can adjust the shutter speed i.e. aperture priority mode). That would the preferred fast "street shooting" mode. Autofocus is for wimps, landscapes & inanimate objects.
Guest Bernd Banken Posted February 7, 2010 Share #11 Posted February 7, 2010 Five meter with a 35mm lens would be "street-landscape".......

When I read that the focus is hunting in low light and the files with this sensor are great in low light compare to smaller sensors, how will it come together? Focusing manually? - wait there is no focus ring and an exact high resolution screen...and shooting table tops in dim italian pizzerias is fine but not every day... I hear ya... you have to point the focus at the subject that is lit (even if barely lit) and wait for it to to focus... it will eventually. Then hold the half press, reframe, and snap. It'll be slow and it is not for action, but it will work. My point was that the LX3 and DP4 also do this in low light and the quality will not be anywhere near the X1's. earleygallery Posted February 7, 2010 Share #14 Posted February 7, 2010 which is the target group this camera? I've said all along, from when the full specs were made public, that IMHO the X1 appeared to be targeted directly at typical P&S camera owners (more fashionable types who prefer 'designer' brands and unique design) who wanted 'something better' but were not interested in a DSLR camera. You can be sure this camera will be all over the lifestyle magazines. So, they are used to the LCD 'viewfinder' and the layout of the controls, the motorized lens etc., but can now experiment with different shutter speeds and apertures to learn some more about photography if they so choose, and serves Leica as a stepping stone to the M cameras or whatever next model they have up their sleeves. It is what it is. If that doesn't suit your needs then find something else which does. Most of us on here are not the target market for the X1, which explains the negative opinions so far. Douglasco Posted February 7, 2010 Share #15 Posted February 7, 2010 I have the D-lux4 and the X1, the focusing speed is the same on both cameras, but the image quality on the X1 is amazing for a small compact. There is less shutterlag on the X1 than the D-lux4. you cannot compare the two cameras

grober Posted February 7, 2010 Share #19 Posted February 7, 2010 slow in every function, focussing, shutter release, playback, menu navigation etc.etc. cheers andy Don't have my X1 yet but, heck, slowing down the shooting process -- if indeed that's what the X1 does -- ain't all bad. Ever hear of the American photographer Ansel Adams? -g P. S. OK, I give: what does "IQ" stand for if not the traditional meaning (intelligence quotient)?
marcg Posted February 7, 2010 Share #20 Posted February 7, 2010 It is meant to stand for image quality. Of course Ansel used a view camera for most of his work. He might well have been pleased to use an X1 and I can imagine that he would often have thought about mounting it on a tripod with a level. Someone elsewhere said talked about having the right tools for the job. Absolutely right and I think that the X1 would make a superb landscape camera. But is that why most people buy it?
