What hood with what lens

Having come late to Leica and trying to build up a set of lens with a limited budget to go with a Leica III or F and a M3 - all second hand from diverse sources, I would like some information about what hood goes with what lens! Is there a database or list as often when you buy a lens - such as the M3 Summaron 2.8/35 - there is no hood sold with it.

I would appreciate any info. By the way - what a great forum with such a wealth of intelligent information and (for the most part) friendly advice.

Hello and welcome. There used to be an online database with Leica M-lenses, hoods etc., but it seems not to exist anymore. I usually look in Dennis Laney's "Leica collector's guide" or the book on leica M by Jonathan Eastman, to find the information you're looking for. Several lenses had a specific hood, but in many cases other more general hoods can be used as well. For the 2.8/35 Summaron I think the hood IROOA (12571) was meant, but the more common hood 12585 probably works fine as well. Check prices and availability on ebay and other sites.

For Summaron 2,8 35 you can use12585 or the older IROOA (aka 12571) or the older again ITDOO... hoods have a rather complex history with many models and variants, and some lenses, like the above, can mount different models (the superclassic Elmar 50 A36 had 3, and the newer Elmar 50 E39 another 2 or 3...) : that's the reason for a simple, global, comprehensive table probably does not exist.. but the book of Laney, quoted above, is a very complete guide about: if you start to put ensemble a historical set, this easily available book is almost a must... in case, in the pocketable - condensed version named "Leica accessory guide".
