M9: Passport warranty differs between countries?

I'd already sent you a pm Chris, but that aside, it now seems a bit bloody rich that you are now writting to Leica when only seven posts ago you were saying 'I' was flying off the handle! And you didn't even buy your M9 before me!

Steve - I stll think you flew off the handle - I don't think it's a conspiracy as you seemed to imply. re before and after. The passport here is for #2. The first M9 (with 12 months passport) was bought from RG Lewis on 9/9. ;)

 

But hey - thanks for raising the question and to others for their responses. I'll get back to the list when I hear from Leica UK's M.D.

Just to clarify things here. The Leica UK Passport runs for 1 year on all M bodies as of October 2009. If any M bodies, including M9's, were purchased before October 2009 then they should have a 2 year Passport warranty. If you believe your Passport is incorrect then contact the Leica Customer Service Department and they will ammend the system and re-print you the correct Passport. Please note though that they will ask for proof of purchase i.e. receipt, which can be e-mailed or faxed over.

Hi - I've just heard back from Leica and you're right. M camera's purchased before October 1 2009 get 2 years passport. After that it's one. Very odd. N.B. this has no impact on the manufacturer's warranty which runs for two years (I think!).

 

Seems a bit short sighted of Leica UK - but at least I have one benefit as an early adopter and am glad that one of my M9s has this extra cover.... :)

I have a question- I purchased my camera from the USA- however I am in Australia. In the box there was a warranty card for an M8 camera... It says it is an application for a two year warranty (for an M8). I simply assumed it is meant for the M9- I only just noticed it says it should be filled out within 30 days... which only gives me a few days to fill it out...

 

anyone have any ideas how my warranty would work being in Australia but purchasing from the USA?

well what can I say? I just checked my status online and my camera was shown as having been sold in October- when in fact I didn't get it until late december. I emailed Leica and asked for a clarification: I got a response in 3 minutes! My status was instantly changed and my warranty is locked in with the Australian Leica agent listed for service issues.

Kudos to Leica - I was also pleased that they got back to me so promptly in the UK. Customer Service has maybe made some New Year resolutions. I'm happy with the outcome on this + grateful to the OP for starting this exchange - yet another example of how useful this community can be when we're dealing with practical matters (as opposed to speculating over unpractical ones... ;))

So my point about the risk you take ordering from a regional dealer is vindicated in full. Its not worth it if Leica are changing the specification of benefits after you placed your order and before you eventually get your camera. Be early on the list with a London dealer where they get more cameras.
