Any idea if it is possible to get the age of an M8 from the serial number? Can't find any relevant info via Google. As I am looking to purchase a used M8 it would be helpful to assess it's age from the serial number, working on the premise that the newer the camera the less use and therefore better reliability. looking at one with a s. no

3103129. can't find a late silver M8 anywhere.

Thanks all!

If I recall correctly the 31xxxx serials are from the early patch. So if you end up buying that one make sure you get warranty for it and also check for the infamous puprle stripes @high iso.

I recently purchased a 31xxx series M8 myself and it had the stripes. Luckily I got it from a reputable dealer and they sent it to solms for repairs. They did a whole CLA, RF adjustments, general adjustment and replaced the ccd for pixel faults! I also got a 1 year Leica warranty for the whole camera after such large repair!

So all in all, if you find a mint early series M8 with warranty for a reasonable price it could be the deal of a lifetime. Such as in my case.. mine had only 160 shots taken before me!

I bought a 355xxx that was an M8.2, but with the M8.2 box that was 319xxx all paperwork was based on 319xxx being M8.2 and Solms confirmed........hmmm.....but then again there was something funny with the 355xxx body not matching the box serial number so I returned it.

In short...serial number 319xx that was M8.2.

This camera is from January to April 2007, i.e the second batch. It should be as reliable as any newer M8, provided it has visited Solms at least once, when it would have gotten the automatic T2 upgrade.

Jaap is there a serial number/year combo list available somewhere on the net?

I'm afraid there is not, Paolo. The point is that Leica uses batches of serial numbers. The first M8 batch from 3100001 to 3101500 was shipped in November 2006. The second batch, up to 3107500 in the first months of 2007. After that, I am not sure, but I am convinced other early users can fill this information out.

This is an interesting one....Leica claims that the M8.2 that I bought with serial number 319xxxx is a real M8.2....but I have reasons to doubt now!

I am so glad that it is going back to the shop!

I have one of the first batch < #3101500 but it was refurbished at factory before being sold. No problem so far.

I have another one #3329***, the only difference i feel is the rear wheel a little harder to turn (locks better), otherwise no problem either.

The serial number of my first M8 was 3102592. It went back to Solms three times for the sudden death syndrome before being replaced with one from a later batch.

That is the T2 upgrader. Iirc you had the trouble in an early stage, before Leica figured out what the problem was.

Actually, it was that camera in particular that they finally discovered the problem on by tearing it down and testing everything.

Interesting info reg serials Jaapv. I guess I had some misinformation regarding mine earlier on... Somebody said mine was from the early batch but seeing this it might not be so!

Mine is #3197183. Any idea on the production time?

Luigi: You seem to have earlier serial# than mine. When did you purchase your and do you have any idea on it's production time?

I have a Silver M8 serial number 3195478. I purchased it new in Jan 2008 as a demo model

interestingly the box in which it came was clearly marked with a tag " Ex Demo M8 Silver" with the correct serial on the label on the bottom opf the box. It has given no problems (yet) was this body carefully checked out before being dispatched ? are there others bodies like this out there ?

Doug.

Thanks all, The camera is advertised on Red Dot so I presume will have warranty. They are on holiday at the moment so can't check till Monday. The price is a bit steep at £1800 though. Luigi, what would a "certain" price be? PM me if you like! Would I get stung for VAT and import tax if I buy from abroad? Anyone know?
