Strange Leica camera spotted...

What great fun. LOL

The iPhone EXIF data is intact and the GPS data is functional too... use the MapQuest link.

I have found it interesting that Leica in the past seemed to hold the 5D MK11 in high regard for image comparison... in so much they've never trashed the 5D MK11's image quality.

If not a "hoax"... on anyone's part, could/would Leica consider a repackaging and branding a 5D with a R lens mount? Similar to their Panasonic arrangement? The only flaw in that consideration is they stopped production on R lenses.... so that almost makes no sense. I mean if they were to pursue that sort of option, you'd think they at least continue with some small collection of R glass remaining in production.

Who knows...? Pretty wild speculation. LOL

That's what I'm thinking but point taken on the stop of r-lens manufacturing.

Wasn't the R-manufacturing equipment up for auction? Who purchased it if it's been sold already?

I have a 5D MkII with R lenses and, even allowing for the double imaging, the handgrip sticks out too far.

It's curious that there's so much distance between the front of the hot shoe and the logo, which brings to mind a Samsung or a bridge camera (although it's obviously not the latter) ...

Pete.

Someone who uses a Canon with R lenses and has a sense of humour.

Yeah it's clearly a Canon. Look at the handgrip and especially at the lens mount button: it's Canon-like and it's... on the right. Not on the left like the R series and the S2.

Mule M9s were out and about with either no "Mx" marking, or M8 markings.

Leica wouldn't allow a mule like this out without hiding the name on the pentaprism. This is a punter who has messed with his Canon, IMO. I could put a Leica name on my D700 if I wanted to be really sad.

Unless it's Leica Camera AG's viral marketing department on the go again.

How long would a fellow with a camera like that have to walk around to create a new "Leica M9 spotted" viral campaign? Two days max if he stayed in the perimeter of a Leica shop as the one in Oslo.

Release 10.01.10..?

What if you find the AA filter on the Canon chip too agressive? That's one of the reasons why I went to the bother of going down the Nikon route.

I can't see Canon making 5Dxx cameras with different chips in, for what will be an incredibly small niche market, in their terms. FUrther, is stop-down metering really acceptable for a Leica-sponsored solution? I don't think so. It's fine for those of us who have gone our own way, but not if it's from the manufacturer.

I've seen enough people put an ///M on low end BMW's and I've seen a photographer actually put a Leica red dot on his SLR body. It was an obvious attempt to either be funny, or try and impress others. I would imagine this is likely along the same lines.

Hmmm...so all this time people are bitching about a digital R solution when canon already makes one (with adapter)? Buy the adapter, get a canon and use your "R glass."

It's not quite that simple. Not all R lenses will fit all Canon dSLRs. You have to use stop down metering. The metering on the 5D isn't totally linear - it over exposes as you stop down the lens. While those may not be problems for a few, I don't think it would be a solution with general appeal.

I find it hard to believe that anyone would take the time to tape the LEICA name to another camera and carry it around for everyone to see. Anyone with a real interest in an unknown Leica would ask to see it and then the fraud would be up. I just don't get it.

What's worse, in my book, is de-badging a 318i...

When I was 17, I put red electrical insulation tape over the chrome trim round my Mum's VW Golf radiator grille. Funnily enough, it didn't make it into a GTi, and the tape was removed within about a week, as it actually looked pretty stupid.

It was another 10 years before could afford a real Golf GTi, but the wait was worth it...

I really wish I could be convinced that Leica have changed their minds over the R10, but it's just not happening for me at the moment. This thread hasn't changed a thing.

Last week I stopped at my local Leica dealer's as there was some likeable guy from Leica presenting the M9, X1 and S2. While fiddling with the gear I was told in the course of the conversation that Leica were really working on "the solution" indeed. The resources freed by the end of developing the three new cameras were being redirected at the moment. Planned was to bring out a camera with new AF-lenses that would also accept the classic R ones without the need to stop down after focusing. And it was to be full frame. Both of which (ff and no stopping down) would be welcome news to R-users. And the camera under development was probably EVIL.

As the guy was by no means Dr. Kaufmann himself this probably has to be taken with the proverbial grain of salt. He did seem insightful enough that I would not put him in the drawer for the unknowing rambler, though.

My guess would be that we will not hear anything "official" until next year's photokina in Köln (september). Projekt ASIEN (Asia, Canon) this time around in lieu of Projekt AFRIKA (a.k.a. S2) anyone?

... an additional thought:

As Leica seem to be able to buy Sony/Nikon's D300S-sensor for their X1 why shouldn't they be ably to get the D700- or even D3x-sensor as well.

I am not familiar enough with the body outlines of Panasonic's previous feeble attemps to gain a foothold in DSLRs (anyone ever seen an DMC-L10?). Could the picture the TO took in Norway be the Leica variant of a new PanaLeica ff-DSLR? Does the form/style fit? I think it does have a certain resemblance with the outlines of said L10. But maybe it's just a poseur, all right...
