haroldp Posted December 6, 2009 Share #22 Posted December 6, 2009 I am using Sandisk Extreme III 8gb 30 mb/sec , and Transcend Class 6 SDHC 8gb without problems. I always format in the camera I will be using. Regards ... Harold
enboe Posted December 6, 2009 Share #23 Posted December 6, 2009 My M9 has issues with every brand and type of card I own. I have not tried one of the Class 6 Sandisks yet, but if that fails as well, I will be sending in the camera. I do like the idea of cleaning the contacts. May have to try that first. Basically, I am using a 20% failure rate camera until after the holidays.
brainiac37 Posted December 11, 2009 Share #24 Posted December 11, 2009 To the OP, I have experienced the same problems. SanDisk UltraII (8GB) and ExtremeIII (4GB) -- multiple cards -- did not work reliably. My M9 is now in the Leica NJ repair facility after only a week. There is something obvious that we are not discussing here. My bigger concern is not cards that don't work, it's cards that work for a while and then start having problems. If I could find cards that work 100% all the time, I'll spend the money to buy them even if they are more expensive. The simple truth is that on my unit, some cards don't work at all, and the ones that work will still sometimes fail, and sometimes with increased failure rate even though I haven't touched or removed the card in the slot. (In other words, it's not a mechanical issue!! It's either intermittent electrical or firmware issue.) This is a recipe for missing shots left and right unless you carry around 20 cards and go through all 20 when "good" cards start having problems. At that point, not only is it extremely ridiculous, it's extremely painful given that you have to take off the bottom cover each time. (Yes, I know I can press the little button on the bottom to pretend.)
250swb Posted December 11, 2009 Share #25 Posted December 11, 2009 I've been using a Sandisk Extreme III 16gb card and it hasn't given any trouble at all. Touch wood it all seems bomb proof given that if I do chimp I don't always wait for the red light to stop flashing. Steve
HSL Posted December 13, 2009 Share #26 Posted December 13, 2009 Hi Everyone, I just purchased a bunch of Sandisk Ultra II 16 gb on sale from Adorama for an M9 on order. The invoice says Ultra II, but the packaging and card itself is labeled only "Ultra." Sandisk tech support says 16 GB Ultra and Ultra II are identical except for the label change to delete the II. Can anyone with an M9 and this newly labeled 16 gb "Ultra" verify that it works trouble free and reasonably fast? I don't want to return them if they're what I need -- even though Leica officially approves 16 gb Ultra II specifically. Thanks. HSL

brainiac37 Posted December 13, 2009 Share #28 Posted December 13, 2009 You need to test them out. SanDisk Ultra2 cards are supposed to work, but a number of people (including myself) have had issues. (Camera complaining "no SD card" or "locked SD".) I eventually returned my camera to Leica for repair, so there's no guarantee that it will work without trying, as far as I know. Knorp Posted December 13, 2009 Share #29 Posted December 13, 2009 Because of all the card issues I decided not to buy any new card(s) yet till new firmware sorts it out and for the time being stick to an 'old' Sandisk Ultra II 4Gb that I recovered from a drawer of my desk. It works flawlessly so far (ok ok have my M9 just one day ). All the best.
DanielM Posted January 29, 2010 Share #30 Posted January 29, 2010 I have had the same problem with an Extreme SD 4GB card that had worked fine in the past. The strange thing is allowed me to format the card but then would crash a frame or two later. I have tried my other cards and they seem to be OK for the moment. vish Posted January 29, 2010 Share #31 Posted January 29, 2010 If it's any help to anyone, I managed to sort out some formatting issues with OS X yesterday using the terminal. I run Snow Leopard and Disk Utility doesn't do a proper job of formatting my cards - some FAT16/32 issue. Anyway, to the point, here's the line I used in the Terminal to format my card, which is now running perfectly everywhere. diskutil partitionDisk /dev/disk1 MBRFormat "MS-DOS FAT32" "Leica_M9" 100% Hopefully this will be of some use to someone, somewhere. LLT Posted January 30, 2010 Share #34 Posted January 30, 2010 I also have 4 Sandisk Ultra II 16 Gb, haven't had any issues with the M9 not reading the cards, so was able to format them, but did have an issue with one of the cards. I had digital-looking lines appear randomly through some images. Haven't had that problem since I got rid of that particular card. Good luck! I'm sure it's something that is fixable. I wouldn't write off the M9 as a professional tool just yet.
mby Posted January 30, 2010 Share #35 Posted January 30, 2010 (...) diskutil partitionDisk /dev/disk1 MBRFormat "MS-DOS FAT32" "Leica_M9" 100% (...) First make sure that your SD Card is /dev/disk1 !!!

therbert Posted January 30, 2010 Share #37 Posted January 30, 2010 Use the df command on the OS X terminal: df without an SD card mounted (on my Intel iMac named "elmarit" with three hard drives): elmarit:~ tom$ df Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/disk0s2 976426672 200695036 775475636 21% / devfs 116 116 0 100% /dev /dev/disk2s2 976426672 228795804 747630868 23% /Volumes/backup /dev/disk1s10 292925360 199925380 92999980 68% /Volumes/spare With an 8GB SanDisk Ultra III card formatted for my M8.2: elmarit:~ tom$ df Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/disk0s2 976426672 200695036 775475636 21% / devfs 117 117 0 100% /dev /dev/disk2s2 976426672 228795804 747630868 23% /Volumes/backup /dev/disk1s10 292925360 199925380 92999980 68% /Volumes/spare /dev/disk3s1 7957816 36 7957780 0% /Volumes/NO NAME You will see that the SD card, "NO NAME" has designation /dev/disk3s1
Nicoleica Posted January 30, 2010 Share #38 Posted January 30, 2010 Or.......You could just use the standard Mac Disk Utility program to format it. It uses FAT16 or FAT32 as appropriate for the SD card size. (Or even just use Disk Utility to give you the volume information by verifying the SD card volume.) ho_co Posted January 31, 2010 Share #39 Posted January 31, 2010 Use the df command on the OS X terminal:... You will see that the SD card, "NO NAME" has designation /dev/disk3s1 Great! Thanks. Now bear with me just one more step: With your setup, what would I type into Terminal to format the SD card? Would that be: diskutil partitionDisk /dev/disk3 MBRFormat "MS-DOS FAT32" "Leica_M9" 100% ? Or.......You could just use the standard Mac Disk Utility program to format it. It uses FAT16 or FAT32 as appropriate for the SD card size. "Yes but..." 1) Vish says in post 31 above that Disk Utility wasn't doing the job. 2) Didn't I read elsewhere on the forum that Disk Utility is supposed to determine automatically whether to format FAT16 or FAT32, but that for some users it didn't always do so? (Or even just use Disk Utility to give you the volume information by verifying the SD card volume.) Great point. That's a real help for Terminal illiterates. But now the same question as above: How do I use that information, i.e. where do I stick it? (In the Terminal command line, of course. ) Welcome, dear visitor! Here would I use the Terminal command line: diskutil partitionDisk /dev/disk2 MBRFormat "MS-DOS FAT32" "Leica_M9" 100% ? or diskutil partitionDisk /dev/disk2s1 MBRFormat "MS-DOS FAT32" "Leica_M9" 100% ? therbert Posted January 31, 2010 Share #40 Posted January 31, 2010 I believe that one only needs to use /dev/disk2, for example. The following "s" and number indicate partition numbers, including drivers, which you can see with "diskutil list".
