the perfect travel kit

It's got to be light and I have 2 travel options for myself:

1) Just the X1 in a belt pouch

2) The X1 in a belt pouch on the left and a Nikkor zoom70-200/prime 85mm f1.4/105 micro VR (choose one) on a sling, I use Blackrapid.

I find the above 2 superb coz your hands will still be free to enjoy the holiday. These days I mostly just bring the X1. If I go on safari then the X1 covers the wider to normal and the big zoom takes care of the rest.

That is a good recommendation, but if you don't have the coin for this, Domke is putting out an absolutely fantastic bag for a rangefinder setup. It is the F-803.

Couldn't agree more. I made up an adapted inner pocket to take lenses - bodies slip down on either side - plenty enough protection. If you're happy to stack lenses (which I am) you can get 2 M bodies with lenses attached + 4 other lenses in the bag + WATE finder / hoods + caps + WhiBal card in front pockets + cards and batteries in the flap pocket. TOTALLY practical during a shoot. The Leica 21 and the Zeiss 18 have to fight for their place. The Zeiss is winning at the moment...

I use this bag all the time for local shoots. When I'm travelling I cut down on the kit but keep the same bag. Win, win. Evidence below.:)

Chris, this is a spot on example of getting as much, as possible into a small package as possible, to use on a destination.

When I travel though (and as much so, when I go out for shooting), I pack a bag, so it easily as just half filled photographically.

There is nothing more disturbing for me, than having to fiddle around, to get to a certain camera or lens.

I always pack, so I can pick any item anytime with one quick, direct move - this prohibits tight packing and the smallest of all bags in the first place.

Considering a travel bag, to pack full, empty at an hotel and only take a few items on a go, your bag would be fine though.

If I would have to take your gear at once without a base to unload, my bag would be twice as big for easier handling.

I'm off to Europe for a month in the New Year.

Looking at: taking the:

M9, WATE, 35 ASPH 'Lux, 75 'Cron . Dithering about the 24 Emarit. 2 Batteries 3 sandisk cards (2x16; 1x 32), iPad and the V-Lux 20 for emergencies!

Think I'll leave the SB 24D, 28 'Cron, 50 'Cron and 90 Elmarit and the cv 12 home!

regards

David

Fair point - but there's a difference between transporting the kit and using it. My experience is:

- in a typical shooting situation (not street) I have two bodies in use - the grey with lenses from 50 and up (the RF and lenses were matched in Solms under warranty) and the black with wide. This gives me FOUR available slots in the bag for shuffled lenses. This works fine.

- for trekking I use a padded LowePro bum-bag with a LowePro 1N lens case fixed to the belt. 28 or 35 in the bag, 135 A-T in the lens case.

- for street I use a soft "ethnic" across the body bag. There's a 28 or 35 on one body + a 50 if needed.

Just my 2 cents.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi everyone,

I use a Domke F3x bag to carry my M6 and M4-P plus 2 additional lenses and flash on the Airplane. Once at my location / hotel, I put what I need for the day's outing, usually one body and 2 lenses plus lightmeter and film in a Bare Bones Bag from Figital revolution. This is a very light and quick to use bag. No padding, but so easy to carry around all day. It's my favorite for an all day outing. If I use My Mamiya 6 and lenses I tend to use another F3X bag, but this is decided before I go on a trip. I don't want to have too much equipment on the plane either. On bag with camera gear, and one very light bag for day trips.

On my last trip I used a Billingham Presstop bag to carry two bodies, Telyt-V 280, TE 135, Elmarit 90, Summilux50, Summicron 35, Summilux 24, SF24D, Visoflex, Binoculars, chargers, filters etc. in a compact package weighing 9 Kgs as a transporter bag which I would leave in a safe place whilst taking the minimum kit I needed out each day in a small Billingham Leica Bag, or even one camera - one lens. The only fixed feature being the Luigi battery and SD card case clipped to the camera strap.

For transport, I carry (up to) 2 bodies 4 lenses (rear couplers), accessory finder(s) and SF24D in a Domke J5XB. In a similar-sized Eagle Creek waist-shoulder bag (with internal dividers removed) I have my assortment of SD cards, spare batteries, chargers, blower brush, sensor-cleaning kit, spare filters, Wolverine portable HD, and Leitz table tripod. Both bags are placed in a PacSafe DaySafe small slash-proof (embedded wire mesh) rucksack.

When I go out shooting I bring what I want in the Domke, and the rest stays behind. The DaySafe has an internal compartment, also slash-proof, with grommets around the opening through which passes a thick braided-wire cable. The cable is pulled tight to close off the contents, slipped around some heavy fixture like a heating pipe, and secured back at it's origin with a padlock, making it impossible to get at the contents without cutting the lock or cable. Very secure against the kind of opportunistic theft one would expect in a hotel room. Few hotel thieves come equipped with liquid nitrogen and/or industrial bolt-cutters :D

My "dream" kit, under construction, would be 2x M9 (actually, will probably be M9 + M10, the time I finish to pay the 24 Lux ;-) ), 50 Lux ASPH, 24 Lux ASPH, and probably 90 Cron ASPH. Might be completed by a wider lens?

Just came back from a one week business trip.

Had a messenger bag as always, to carry:

15" MBP + charger

M8.2

M7 + Motor-M

Noctilux

35 Lux ASPH

90 Cron

a few rolls film

I used mostly the M8.2 with 35mm for the day and early evenings.

The Noctilux + TriX was for the night.

I sometimes took the Noctilux on the M8.2 for a little longer "50mm".

The Cron was almost unused and will stay at home next time.

The 135 APO is about the same weight and bulk (longer, but slimmer) and will be with me for most reach next time.

I sometimes missed a 15mm, but it would have been just slightly used, so the 35mm + 50mm on two different bodies was perfect for me.

  • 3 months later...

So, in preparation for a long-ish trip later this year I revisited this question. This time I created a spreadsheet to understand my options. I have considered the difference in Field of View as well as the relative difference in percent :o

My lenses range from 21 to 90mm. The conclusions are almost a little dull, but it seems the following combinations give the most balanced spread:

- 2 Lenses: 25/50 or 35/75

- 3 Lenses: 28/50/90

- 4 Lenses: 21/35/50/75 or 25/35/50/90

But balance is not everything, so I ask myself two simple questions before deciding what to bring. That can easily result in a completely different set ending in the bag :)

- Pick the widest and longest lens I imagine using for that particular location

- Decide how many lenses I can be bothered to carry

Cheers, Per.

as a backup I'd have a m8 with 35 cron pre-asph readily packed at a friend's house to get UPSed to wherever I lost my bag.

I like some variation of this idea the best, although maybe with an m9. And then have an LX5 or something small for the day or two it took to arrive.

For a one week trip to Cuba, where I assume I won't be able to find any replacements for my stuff, I'm taking:

1-M9

1-24 Elmar

1-35 Cron ASPH

1-90 Elmarit

1-Sanho Hyperdrive with 320 GB drive

2-Leica battery chargers

3-Leica batteries

1-Oskar Artist and Artisan Bag

1-Novoflex tiny tripod with head

2-4GB Sandisk cards

2-8GB Sandisk cards

1-Leica 24 flash

1-Canon G12 point and shoot in case all else fails

And the best part of it is--I can actually fit everything in the Oskar bag.

Enjoy your trip, have been there in August, a great country to visit. I trust you are aware of the "travel ban" for US residents (not just citizens). If not, google for good advice as regards US immigration on the way back home. Good luck.
