fotografr Posted November 17, 2009 Share #1 Posted November 17, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've been wanting to do this for quite some time. Yesterday I got a black dot from Don Goldberg so last night did the conversion. The red dot was a buggar to get off (broke two Exacto knife points), but I think my M8 looks a bit less conspicuous now. Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Hi fotografr, Take a look here Full Stealth Mode. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted November 17, 2009 Share #2 Posted November 17, 2009 To be fair - it looks like an M8... I don't buy into this camera-disguise thing, I must confess. If the party opposite to you knows what a Leica is it will make no difference, if he doesn't, it will make no difference either. But my cameras do wear black dots, as I find the red ones too contrasty too.
Gawain Hewitt Posted November 17, 2009 Share #3 Posted November 17, 2009 I like the look - how did you get the paint out of the M8 text?

That being said, I do want black dots for my M6 and M8 for the contrast difference on the body.
fotografr Posted November 17, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted November 17, 2009 Yes, I also agree that nobody who knows anything about cameras would be fooled. Mostly I just like the way it looks. Gawain--I got the paint out using toothpicks and some solvent. It actually came out quite easily.
darkspark Posted November 17, 2009 Share #6 Posted November 17, 2009 I like the look. It looks much cleaner. How was the red dot stuck to the body? Just glue, or was it adhesive back? (any recommendation for the type/brand of glue if it was glue?)

Just glue, or was it adhesive back? (any recommendation for the type/brand of glue if it was glue?) Both the original red dot and the black replacement have adhesive on the back, so you just remove the paper cover and stick it right on. That part couldn't be easier. stunsworth Posted November 17, 2009 Share #8 Posted November 17, 2009 I didn't realize it was possible to pry the red dot out. It comes out very easily with a tooth pick or cocktail stick. The dot on my M6 was scuffed and Leica sent me a replacement. It arrives stuck on a piece of waxed paper. Removing the existing dot involved working around the edge with the soft pick/stick until it began to lift. Once the dot is removed you can see a rangefinder adjustment screw behind it. earleygallery Posted November 17, 2009 Share #9 Posted November 17, 2009 but you left the red dot and white paint on the lens.....?
andybarton Posted November 17, 2009 Share #10 Posted November 17, 2009 Why not take off the silver "Leica" off the black dot too, if you've gone to the trouble of removing the M8?
fotografr Posted November 17, 2009 Author Share #11 Posted November 17, 2009 Why not take off the silver "Leica" off the black dot too, if you've gone to the trouble of removing the M8? Good point. And then the white numbers on the shutter speed dial. Hate those.
Nicoleica Posted November 17, 2009 Share #12 Posted November 17, 2009 but you left the red dot and white paint on the lens.....? And used a silver filter on a black lens!
fotografr Posted November 17, 2009 Author Share #13 Posted November 17, 2009 It comes out very easily with a tooth pick or cocktail stick. Perhaps some do, but mine wasn't so easy. There was virtually no space to get a toothpick in to pry the old dot out. I was barely able to get the point of an Exacto knife along the edge on mine, which is why I ended up breaking two points before getting the dot out. fotografr Posted November 17, 2009 Author Share #14 Posted November 17, 2009 but you left the red dot and white paint on the lens.....? That's next. Thought I'd just dip the whole lens into a bucket of black paint.
fotografr Posted November 17, 2009 Author Share #15 Posted November 17, 2009 And used a silver filter on a black lens! It's called "touch of class," Nicole. Actually, when I got that filter, it was either take the silver or wait 2 to 3 more months for a black one. Remember those days?

wparsonsgisnet Posted November 17, 2009 Share #19 Posted November 17, 2009 I think we need a shot of you in your stealth garb. We shouldn't have to image what you look like when the M8 is SO stealthy.

Brent's so stealthy that he's actually in his picture but you can't see him, Bill. Pete.
