I've been wanting to do this for quite some time. Yesterday I got a black dot from Don Goldberg so last night did the conversion. The red dot was a buggar to get off (broke two Exacto knife points), but I think my M8 looks a bit less conspicuous now.

To be fair - it looks like an M8... :D I don't buy into this camera-disguise thing, I must confess. If the party opposite to you knows what a Leica is it will make no difference, if he doesn't, it will make no difference either. But my cameras do wear black dots, as I find the red ones too contrasty too.

Completely agree, if someone knows what a Leica is they know and having a black dot will not matter. That being said, I do want black dots for my M6 and M8 for the contrast difference on the body.

I like the look. It looks much cleaner.

How was the red dot stuck to the body? Just glue, or was it adhesive back? (any recommendation for the type/brand of glue if it was glue?)

Both the original red dot and the black replacement have adhesive on the back, so you just remove the paper cover and stick it right on. That part couldn't be easier.

I didn't realize it was possible to pry the red dot out.

It comes out very easily with a tooth pick or cocktail stick. The dot on my M6 was scuffed and Leica sent me a replacement. It arrives stuck on a piece of waxed paper. Removing the existing dot involved working around the edge with the soft pick/stick until it began to lift.

Once the dot is removed you can see a rangefinder adjustment screw behind it.

Perhaps some do, but mine wasn't so easy. There was virtually no space to get a toothpick in to pry the old dot out. I was barely able to get the point of an Exacto knife along the edge on mine, which is why I ended up breaking two points before getting the dot out.

I hope that you were wearing suitable health and safety equipment for this task :) Those broken blades are highly dangerous. ;)
