Riccis Posted November 11, 2009 Share #1 Posted November 11, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) For those waiting to see the goods, please visit David's blog (David Farkas Photography Blog) for his excellent S2 review. Even though the S2 is not for me (I'm an M guy ) I appreciate all the hard work he's put into it over the past few months. Thanks David and enjoy folks! Gentleman Villain Posted November 11, 2009 Share #3 Posted November 11, 2009 Excellent! Thanks very much for posting I particularly appreciate David's short history lesson at the beginning of the review. It helps to inform and remind some of us of where the S2 fits within the context of the evolution of digital and what thought process inspired the design of the system. tashley Posted November 11, 2009 Share #5 Posted November 11, 2009 Sorry but i find the sample pictures in the blog terrible... Not a very polite comment to someone who has worked very hard to provide eagerly awaited information. If your issue with the shots is aesthetic, you've missed the point and if it is technical perhaps you would like to share your insights?
ptomsu Posted November 11, 2009 Share #6 Posted November 11, 2009 I already mentioned in another forum, that this is a really good review. It is the kind of reviews we need, not just pixel peeping etc, but real daily handling experiences combined with some pictures. Well I have to say the longer I think about that the more I feel that Leica has done the right thing not to follow the other MF bandwagons (Hasselblad and Phase remaining today). This is a great concept and will have future, although Leica has to follow up now and deliver - the most important thing! Great work David! And do not care about the voices talking about your images - BTW I like them, because they are not these artistic Pro shoots which most of the community here will not shoot anyway with any camera. marknorton Posted November 11, 2009 Share #7 Posted November 11, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Very interesting review, thank you, David. I think I'm going to apply for a job in Leica's accounts department...

No most of the community will never have such a camera... thats the point... and this camera is not primarily made for common pictures...
sdai Posted November 11, 2009 Share #9 Posted November 11, 2009 I think I'm going to apply for a job in Leica's accounts department... What? to help them count money? I agree these pictures look really good, and they are the typical stuff I will do although I don't think it's a review because of the lacking of a direct comparison to anything. I also wonder why there's no picture taken with the 35mm S lens and someone on this forum claims to have seen pictures taken with it more than a year ago. leicar7 Posted November 11, 2009 Share #11 Posted November 11, 2009 As for the accounts department, don't overlook their optical and other engineers. The US Dept of Education could do worse than bring some of Leica's folks over here for a few weeks to stump for the benefits of young women's and men's giving more thought to pursuing the quantitative subjects in school and university. Anyone remember who was at their booth at Photokina 2006? Would, too, that such advantages brought to you by the S2 be available to the debunked R population. Little to hope for in that department. David, what is Maike doing now after the demise of her R10 project? If I recall correctly, the S2 body/lens system is designed to the environmental seal standards of an ISO spec, heretofore never implemented in a camera system. If the final version is built to this standard, Leica needs to trumpet it more loudly than it apparently did to David and his colleagues. Meeting the ISO sealing requirements for an optical system is a major piece of engineering and one more standard-setting achievement by the Leica folks. Now, then. When can I have an R10 and S-quality new lenses?
felipe-m Posted November 11, 2009 Share #12 Posted November 11, 2009 What? to help them count money? If Katerina is the tutor, I'm willing to learn how to count all over again... 1 S2, 2 S2, 3 S2...
ynp Posted November 11, 2009 Share #13 Posted November 11, 2009 David, thank you for the review. It was good to know that lens adapters are possible. They'd better have an adapter to use the V lenses (at least) when they start the sales next year. Yevgeny
c6gowin Posted November 11, 2009 Share #14 Posted November 11, 2009 Thank you David for the excellent review. I know it took a lot of hard work, time, and expense on your part to do it. I appreciate your efforts.

Dan States Posted November 11, 2009 Share #17 Posted November 11, 2009 My god, no human being is perfect enough in complexion to withstand this kind of digital examination. If anyone ever pointed an S2 at me I would do all I could NOT to be photographed. The amount of detail is actually disturbing.
georg Posted November 12, 2009 Share #18 Posted November 12, 2009 Thank you David, by far the best S2-review in my eyes! My two favourites: The goose (open aperture 320ASA): http://www.drivehq.com/file/df.aspx/shareID6403983/fileID424698627/424698627.jpg And the two open aperture (f2.5)-crops from center and corner - I'm not even able to tell which one is which: http://www.drivehq.com/file/df.aspx/shareID6403983/fileID424692707/424692707.jpg http://www.drivehq.com/file/df.aspx/shareID6403983/fileID424693444/424693444.jpg In comparison, I'm eager to know how dpreview manages to bring up the (technically) worst samples with each camera (or were most of them JPGs?) or others use 1/90s @ 80ASA (pull) to determine quality... I think it's Leicas job to show us great JPGs and DNGs that avoid such mistakes, but since they're unwillling to do so, they must be happy to have David Farkas, his blog propably sells more S2 than the whole expensive marketing-campaign (just like Mancusos legendary DMR-bible-thread)... But maybe I'm completely wrong and most potencial buyers don't even know the internet and I see it through the eyes of an internet-geek...
roguewave Posted November 12, 2009 Share #19 Posted November 12, 2009 David, I very much enjoyed the thorough review. This is a camera I hope will reset the paradigm for hand held digital slr image making. Having already had an opportunity to use this camera, it's hard to communicate just how wonderful it feels in your hands. I'm hopeful that in the coming 12-24 months, Leica will see the merits in marketing a similar body that can make good use of existing R optics at a more moderate price. Thanks again for all your hard work and trying to walk a measured line between being a cheerleader & an honest reporter. Well done. Ben
mhoersch Posted November 12, 2009 Share #20 Posted November 12, 2009 This is a camera I hope will reset the paradigm for hand held digital slr image making. Oh no, not again. I thought we're supposed to have had a paradigm shift with the introduction of the M9. See what Tim Ashley writes: he doesn't even think the S2 should be called a DSLR at all...
