tom0511 Posted November 13, 2009 Share #21 Posted November 13, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I checked another time and have to correct me-the 54 in GNC seems to have the same lag with M8 and M9. Seems to beimproved to what I remember from older firmware and M8, but I might be wrong
Advertisement Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 Hi tom0511, Take a look here Metz 54 MZ series Flash vs. New Leica 58 Flash on M8/M9. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wlaidlaw Posted November 26, 2009 Share #22 Posted November 26, 2009 I have been trying to do some research for an addendum to Sean's SF58 report. This will be in relation to the SF24 and SF58 causing the shut-eyes phenomenon. It is assumed this is due to the pre-flash to main flash interval being equal to many people's blink reflex reaction time. Sadly, in spite of the huge volume of information available on the web, I cannot find any good data on blink reflex timings. I found a reference in a medical paper and emailed the author but only got a pro-forma response and no information. If anyone has any data of human blink reflex time ranges or can point me in the direction of any, I can then get on with the next stage which is using a slave trigger unit and an oscilloscope to determine the pre to main flash intervals for SF24 and 58. My feeling is that the 58 is a bit shorter and maybe a bit weaker but not a whole lot. Wilson
Luke_Miller Posted November 27, 2009 Share #23 Posted November 27, 2009 When I shoot flash with my Nikons I occassionally come across a subject who will consistantly give me "closed eyes" shots. My solution is to use a feature called FV Lock which triggers the pre-flash and calculates proper exposure, but does not make an exposure. Subsequent shots are taken without pre-flashes using the calculated values. This works perfectly to solve the problem. There is no doubt in my mind that the Nikon pre-flashes can trigger a blink reflex in some subjects that is quick enough to beat the main flash. I never see this problem when using my studio monolights. Since FV Lock is not a feature on my M8.2 I believe in a similar situation I would shift from TTL to Auto in order to eliminate the pre-flash.
