pinetar Posted November 10, 2009 Share #1 Posted November 10, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Both sides of the lens have connection points for some kind of strap/cable. Can someone explain the intended function and use of that feature? I don't trust my camera strap with that 5.88# lens on it. gary/ohio Jusst got the lens last week. Advertisement Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 Hi pinetar, Take a look here Security connectors on a Leica R 180 f2. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Overgaard Posted November 10, 2009 Share #2 Posted November 10, 2009 It's for the camera strap so as to have balance. And you can then also hang the 180/2 over the other shoulder when not in use.
mgcd Posted November 10, 2009 Share #3 Posted November 10, 2009 It's for more than balance, the heavy weight of the 180 Apo-Summicron could put undue stress on the bayonet mount if the camera strap is used. Therefore, the lens strap should be used instead when working with the 180 Apo-Summicron or the 280 Apo-Telyt for example. Cheers
pinetar Posted November 11, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted November 11, 2009 Thanks, good points. Small eyelets, I'm not sure what strap to use that can support all that weight. Any hints?
pinetar Posted November 11, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted November 11, 2009 I studied the situation and have a plan.
robsteve Posted November 11, 2009 Share #6 Posted November 11, 2009 Thanks, good points. Small eyelets, I'm not sure what strap to use that can support all that weight.Any hints? The standard Leica strap will do. I think they may have actually came with the same strap as the cameras. I checked the box my lens came in and it has a Leica 14312 Strap box in it. This strap is available from Leica dealers. I would suggest you only use the Leica strap, as other straps use split rings that will scratch the body of the lens. And you can then also hang the 180/2 over the other shoulder when not in use. This is also the reason the R9 put a lock on the mode dial. When I shot my R8 with either the 400mm f2.8 or 180mm f2 the lens strap often moved the mode dial to in between modes and the camera wouldn't fire when I most needed it. pinetar Posted November 11, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted November 11, 2009 OOOH, I just bought split rings. I have many 1000's of ft.of stainless cable, .78mm that I may put on with nylon tubing to protect the lens.

Personally I don't use straps on my DMR set ups, so I've used mine on my M2! But Rob's correct. The 180 cron is a mighty (and very special) beast.
