M9 availability -- a ray of hope?

You don't realize how Leica is lucky to be in such a niche market (digital rangefinder). That kind of behavior in a market with less product differentiation and the third choice would obviously matter a lot more.

Leica is lucky - to still be in business and only because they created that niche market over 50+ years, its been a massive stuggle for them. They are not a giant company with a wealth of manufacturing in electronics behind them.

This is a temporary supply and demand hurdle, that's all.

Last night I went to listen to an inspiring talk by a lady charity worker who had spent her life helping disadvantaged people from all over the world and had achieved some amazing things. Sort of put my life into a different perspective. Slow delivery of the M9? - it matters not.

Sure, your choice.

Not at all. Leica is slow, but not unreliable. Anyone with a reasonable amount of patience will have no reason to be dissatisfied.

Depends on your defintion of unreliable. To me, being said, you'll get yours by end of September and it is now "maybe in November", this is unreliable. Next time, I won't put a ounce of trust in what they announce. And again, dissatisfaction is not in the wait itself and patience, it is in the lack of information and the impression to be have been tricked.

Finally, we seem to have different perceptions on what is acceptable or not from a business. Leica is lucky to have customers like you. ;)

Very wise, if it concerns you so much you should definitely wait until you can see one ready for purchase in the shop.

Actually now that we have a FF M, I think I will do that for any further models... If you look other Leica product announcements, they fall pretty much the same way. It took months for my dealer to get any quantity of Lux 21 & 24, SF58. Not to mention the .95 Nocti and of course the S2. Comparing to other Leica announcements, is not bad....

I don't think Leica "announced" that you would get your camera by the end of September. Maybe you have an unreliable dealer.

imo,

as well all know leica is a small-ish privately owned company. bc of that they can only produce a small amount of inventory. etc etc ect.

my only wish is that leica would allow those of us who have bought and registered m8s to be first in line to receive the M9.

maybe they could do this by registration date? and im thinking only one camera to a customer until there isnt a back log?

Even though I would find that irritating -- since I'm not trading up from an M8 -- I actually think there's some sense in that. Even fairer, I think, would be to allocate a certain percentage of monthly production to existing owners over the first 6 months of production; maybe this would be a gesture that would satisfy both new and existing owners.

At some point you can't make everyone happy, though -- I imagine there may be a lot of longtime Leica owners who've been waiting to pull the trigger on digital until something like the M9 came out...

[..]

Now if he could just do something about customers yammering and thinking they run the company....

[..]

I believe that even the two Goliaths (Canon and Nikon) listen and care for their customers. If Leica follows what you said above, I can assure you that there will not be an M10 nor anything else ... simple as that.

Haven't we learn how to manage expectations? In this case, I think it was managed poorly.

This is exactly how Rolls-Royce handled their new drophead (convertible) introduction. One had to have bought a Phantom in order to have the privelege of putting down the deposit for a Drophead Phantom. Of course now that the dropheads are delivered, the bottom has fallen out of the used Phantom prices as owners are dumping their cars in order to get the car hey really wanted!

I hope my dealer has the M9 by the end of next month; until then I am being patient!

Heck, a few software glitches I read about might have been fixed by the time they box mine up.

If you do not see a publicly available firmware release, they are not fixed; otherwise, you have a release with 2 types of contents in them, not unless they are hardware glitches.

As I recall, the M8 had a pretty big backlog when it was introduced. So those who experienced that, found dealers who would start a list for the M9 before the camera was announced. I would suggest some of you get on the M10 list now.

I figure that Leica finally got decent delivery of the mounted sensor and are now ramped up. That's why November will be better. But even full strength is slow, which is why they probably borrowed S2 workers.

Why so few grey is still a question. I get the idea that one in ten M8s were chrome, but one is three orders are for grey M9s. No idea why, but that would mean more people waiting for grey too.

Why do we go thru this with every new product?

As I recall, the only M Leica was able to deliver in quantity within three months of announcement was the M5.--Guess why.

There's nothing new here. It's always the same. The change is that we've got a forum where we can scream, where we used to have to scream to the dealer, he to the rep, the rep to the company--and in the end, we have always received the product that we ordered.

On the topic of steel-gray: Everywhere someone is saying Leica isn't producing that color right now, but everyone is reporting that as third-hand "from a good source," "totally reliable," "absolutely factual,"--but then with the caveat that "I can't name my source" etc etc.

Supposedly, all the reps have gray; reviewers are receiving gray (see link at http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/104110-m-lenses-m9-camera-review.html). It looks to me as if gray is being produced in smaller quantities along with black.

Does anyone have an adequate source of information on the topic?

I believe that Leica mentioned early on that the grey:black ratio was 1:2, but I can't name my source ;) (because I forgot). That was before the talk of grey not being tough enough, so it is at least in theory possible that Leica made all black for a while, until they figured out what was going on and rectified it, if needed.

All I can tell you is that my grey M9 ordered prior to 9/9/9 has gone through "delivery in about 10 days' as of 9/9, to 'January/February at the earliest' as per the Leica rep last week.

By contrast, at the same time as I was told the grey delivery date, I was also told that I should be seeing a black camera in the next week or so.

Leica said that the M9 would be available on or after 9/9. That is true. Many people who had pre-ordered or were just lucky, bought within a few days.

What Leica did NOT say was that there would be sufficient M9s in stock, worldwide, to satisfy the demand.

I think that isn't quite true either - I think that it would be more accurate to say a lucky few, depending on where they reside, got cameras within a few days. I guess it depends on what your definition of 'many' is ... I think it's exaggerating somewhat compared to the number of people with orders as of 9/9/9.
