The 24 framelines on the M8 are already at the very edge of the finder and relatively difficult to see. How do you frame then on the M9? On that note, does anyone know if the Leica 18mm finder has the 24mm lines (= 18mm cropped) and if that would be practical? If I could use it for 18mm and 24mm I would be even more tempted I was told, when I looked through a 21mm viewfinder, that the inner lines was the 24mm though I'm not sure he was right. The difference between the 18 framelines and the "18 cropped" framelines for the M8 it that the cropped framelines are only corner framelines while the true 18 framelines cover more of long sides of the edges Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
scott kirkpatrick Posted October 24, 2009 Share #9 Posted October 24, 2009 I use a viewfinder with the 24/2.8 on my M8, since I can't really see all sides of the frame at once (glasses). The one I use is made by Cosina-Voigtlaender, intended for a 21 mm lens on the RD-1 -- effective focal length 31.5 mm. It is just a little bit tight at 2 m, but it sits high enough that the lens blocks no more than a few % of the frame. I have both the CV 28mm and the new Leica 21 mm viewfinders and have used them so far with my M8 (don't see an M9 until next month, inshallah). The Leica is slightly lower magnification than the CV, and thus easier to use on the M8, where I am using the inner frame lines. The framing is quite accurate, and the distortion, while visible, is a bit less than I see in the CV viewfinder. Zeiss also makes 21mm and 28mm finders, which are claimed to be "almost distortion-free," but I haven't tried them. I believe they don't have bright lines, but simply show the FOV for the focal length that they are labelled with. Yes, the Leica finder is a 21/28, since it is intended for use with the a 21mm lens on either the M9 or M8. scott Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Tried without it in my M8.2 but with eye-glasses is difficult. With external viewfinder it's easier, you don't have to move your eye looking for the boundaries. I'm waiting for an M9 (steel grey) and my lux 24 too! Viewfinder with M9 is mandatory. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
Nickers Posted October 24, 2009 Share #11 Posted October 24, 2009 This thread is crutial to me (my first post), how usable ( without the use of additional finders) is a 24mm lens? I am also coming from D2 (35mm effective 28-90) to M9 (one day!). How far outside the VF limits is the FOV of the 24mm? I have seen clips (street photography) on line of 24 lux without external VF and if I were starting my M system I would want to go wider than 28mm, preferably with a Lux but I do not want to clutter my system with extra finders or add ons. Unless of course Leica make the obvious move and release a the next Lux: at 28mm? p.s. I will be visiting Mayfair with an SD to test this myself on Monday, I hope to be able to clarify...........
