leicamann Posted October 24, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 24, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Two days ago I was testing my SF20 flash unit on my R8, as per usual..I had a roll of film in the camera, but not wound all the way to the spool.......this time..however the remaining "tongue" of film tripped into the shutter and slashed the tops of some of the shutter blades and pushed out the lower one. Its obvious the shutter will have to be completely replaced. So: 1) is it worth repairing? 2) what about the "Leica USA" horror stories I am reading on Photonet? 3)My guess is the repair cost will outstrip the actual worth of the camera 4) use for "spare parts"...forget it you just destroyed a perfectly good camera!! 5) sort of off topic, but many DMR users have been"damaging their shutter"..why? Thanks in advance Cheers, JRM

imported_peter_m Posted October 24, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 24, 2009 John, Give Kindermann a call and talk to Garry. So far I always got great service from them. Peter

leicamann Posted October 24, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted October 24, 2009 ok ..thanks I will do that.. I thought they went out of the "Leica business " years ago? Any idea about costs? Regards, JRM
imported_peter_m Posted October 24, 2009 Share #5 Posted October 24, 2009 They are still in the Leica fixing business, and pretty good ad it No idea on cost but they will give you an estimate before they do the work, Peter
Overgaard Posted October 24, 2009 Share #6 Posted October 24, 2009 New used R8 cameras are not that expensive, but the advantage of getting ones own repaired (even at the cost of the new used) is that you know and trust the camera, whereas a new used unit you don't. wildlightphoto Posted October 25, 2009 Share #7 Posted October 25, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) 2) what about the "Leica USA" horror stories I am reading on Photonet? Photo.net is a hive of short-fused emotional fear-mongers. 3)My guess is the repair cost will outstrip the actual worth of the camera that's what the seller assumed when I bought my backup DMR, he included an R8 with a damaged shutter. I popped the errant shutter blades back into place using a partly-straightened paper clip and a thumb. 5) sort of off topic, but many DMR users have been"damaging their shutter"..why? I've heard more about film leaders damaging the shutter than I have about DMR-associated damage.
leicamann Posted October 25, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted October 25, 2009 Doug..aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa..this is way more damage than a simple paper clip solution..have a look Welcome, dear visitor! rick_dykstra Posted October 25, 2009 Share #9 Posted October 25, 2009 Ouch! I know the sound of that happening. Following a Kindermann recommendation passed on here I asked for a shutter repair quote and was advised: Cost of shutter assembly, $300.00 Canadian dollar, labor to Install approx. $325.00 Canadian.Of course subject to inspection Of your Leica R8. leicamann Posted October 25, 2009 Author Share #10 Posted October 25, 2009 Rick, as painful it is to look at, its better for people to see and know..right? The Kinderman quote sounds perfectly reasonable, I was getting figures of $1200.00 upwards..because it has the name "Leica" on it. garyp Posted October 26, 2009 Share #11 Posted October 26, 2009 Tough call, but another vote here to have it repaired. As Thorsten said, you would be getting a 'known' machine back, and maybe a better warranty than on a replacement R8. Kindermann Canada is tops in my book ! leicamann Posted October 30, 2009 Author Share #12 Posted October 30, 2009 Thanks. I've decided that if it falls within that price range..then I will get it repaired..its such a lovely camera...and I guess.."I won't be doing that again" Thanks for your input Cheers, JRM
roguewave Posted November 2, 2009 Share #13 Posted November 2, 2009 I have 3 R8's. I have never paid more than 600 for each. All are perfect & have been inspected by Leica in NJ.
Hank Taylor Posted April 8, 2010 Share #14 Posted April 8, 2010 I have 3 R8's. I have never paid more than 600 for each. All are perfect & have been inspected by Leica in NJ. Hi Ben, saw that you have 3 R8's I was thinking on getting one to go along with my m9 since I miss shooting with a reflex for telephoto's and close-ups. I take it your happy with them.
