Hank Taylor Posted October 24, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 24, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, just another question regarding two great lenses. I just pick up an excellent Summicron ##1943386 and plan to test it tomorrow shooting Ektar 100 along with my 50 mm Summilux pre ASPH. Planning on going to Ireland later this year and will only want to take one of them along with my Summilux 35 late Pre ASAP. . What lens would you take? Advertisement Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 Hi Hank Taylor, Take a look here Summilux 50 mm or Summicron 50 mm. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lct Posted October 24, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 24, 2009 Summilux. Both are great but the Summilux is a bit sharper at f/2 and is less prone to flare than the 'cron. Edit: I refer to the latest 'lux, with built-in hood. I have no experience of earlier versions.
lars_bergquist Posted October 24, 2009 Share #3 Posted October 24, 2009 If your version is no. 2, 1964--2004, then I would probably take the 'cron. The old 'lux is a nice dear old lens, and it is true that it is quite robust when it comes to flare and reflexes, but it is really not up to modern definition standards at any stops wider than f:8. The Summilux ASPH on the other hand is a super lens. I am looking forward to using it again on a M9. The old man from the Age of the Summar
UliWer Posted October 24, 2009 Share #4 Posted October 24, 2009 The serial number of your Summicron tells that it is the second ("rigid") version of the Summicron from the early 60s; the first version was the collapsible. Though this is a very well built lens, it may show considerable more flare than the pre-asph Summilux. It is also heavier and you would need a separate lens hood. If you have the last version of the Summilux with built-in sunshade it could be more convenient for your travel. As far as sharpness and resolution are concerned both lenses differ a lot from the actual versions of each lens but not so much from each others. Hank Taylor Posted October 24, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted October 24, 2009 Thanks for your comments , I think before I make the final decision on what lens I will take to Ireland, I'll shoot a roll using both lenses. By the way I tried my 28 mm Elmarit ASPH lens hood on the Summicron and it will work. Hank
christer Posted October 24, 2009 Share #6 Posted October 24, 2009 I tried my 28 mm Elmarit ASPH lens hood on the Summicron and it will work.Hank Will work, what does that mean? Sure a hood for a wide angle lens will not result in dark corners in the picture if you use it on a normal or tele lens. But will it be effective on a longer lens than it was designed for? lct Posted October 24, 2009 Share #7 Posted October 24, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) 12526 hood for 28/2.8 looks exactly the same as 12524 for 35/2 aside from the colour of their buttons. Work fine on both lenses.

Hank Taylor Posted October 24, 2009 Author Share #10 Posted October 24, 2009 The Lens Hood for the 28 mm works fine on both my 35mm Pre Summilux and my 50 mm f 2. Summicron. With the Summilux 50 because its a 43 mm filter size it won't. Will have to go on line with E-bay and pick one up. By the way using the 35mm Summilux I already have the correct lens hood #12504 but this take a Series 7 filter. Hank
lct Posted October 24, 2009 Share #11 Posted October 24, 2009 12524 and 12526 hoods are not made for 50/2 lenses as their stop pin cannot prevent them to rotate on the latters. 12585 (metal) or 12538 (plastic) vented hoods will fit perfectly. 12524 and 12526 hoods are not made for the pre-asph 35/1.4 either. Your 12504 vented hood is the right one. 12586 vented hood will be OK for your pre-asph 50/1.4.
