I'm seeing that Leica needs to learn better PR skills for the world of the web. Like where is a list of serial numbers which need to be returned? stunsworth Posted November 25, 2006 Share #3 Posted November 25, 2006 John, that depends on Leica shipping in strict serial number order, something that may not have happened if they're shipping stock from a stockroom. They should know the serial numbers that have shipped, but they may not have been in numerical sequence. I.e. there may be gaps in the numbers. Yes, but it is a situation where they took a failed camera returned for repair and put the hot shoe and serial number from that camera on the first M8 with the new sensor board - so an early serial number will have the update. They may do this with other cameras too, so knowing the serial number may not be a reliable indicator, at least until someone actually receives a new updated M8 from a dealer. carstenw Posted November 26, 2006 Share #6 Posted November 26, 2006 I am guessing that my M8 may be one of the first fixed, because I sent it in one week before the IR problems really blew up, due to focusing problems. I will post a note when it returns, but the serial numbers will surely be all over the place for a while. What is the highest number that anyone has so far? When they repaired my Digilux2 they changed the number on it to a pre-production number. Many units, mine included, did not ship with any registration code numbers. I know it can be rectified, but it is up to me to chase it up. Not really my priority in life but I need it to happen. I reckon if they gave me the job of P.R. supervisor I could sort a lot of their (non-technical) worries. Keeping clients happy is something I can really manage. We still do not know whether we will be able to do later FW updates ourselves like with most dSLRs via the web and CF or SD card, according to model. I believe the firmware 1.1 mention is in the Leica M8 fix posting on their website; and I think the press release there also says that future firmware updates will be downloadable. From what I recall, no new-version M8's have been shipped; the first 'fixed' cameras will leave Solms on Nov 27 with new hardware and firmware 1.1. (Interestingly, 'end of November' is what we were promised to start with, isn't it? ) So: If it's on the shelf now, it's the first version. Possibly (strictly surmise), Leica won't make firmware 1.1 available on the web for a while, but supply it only on upgraded cameras. That would mean that if a camera has firmware 1.1 in the next couple months, it's the new version. Actually, we do. I asked info@leica-camera.com about this a while back, and was told that the procedure would probably be the same as with the DMR -- download to your PC or MAC, transfer the file to a specified directory on an SD card, insert card, boot... And the announcement (long form) that was leaked talks about downloadable firmware being released as issues are found and solved. I can't see them holding back on new firmware. What a hassle to have to send to NJ from remote locations like here in the frozen north. Temps near 0 F are in the forecast here in the coming week!!
