carstenw Posted October 14, 2009 Share #21 Posted October 14, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I don't care what color the M9 is black, grey, chrome or Hello Kitty Pink. I'm just glad to have it. Does 'real chrome' take a better picture? I'd hate to see your car or your watch (Mike Johnston has a 't' in it.)
Advertisement Posted October 14, 2009 Posted October 14, 2009 Hi carstenw, Take a look here Petition for demanding Leica a real chrome M9, not painted. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
johnastovall Posted October 14, 2009 Share #22 Posted October 14, 2009 I'd hate to see your car or your watch (Mike Johnston has a 't' in it.) The watch is a 25 year old Breitling Cosmonaute, black dial, sapphire front and back, big heavy stainless steel band. The car is a 5 year old white Ford Focus wagon all ratted out from Texas dirt back road driving in search of landscapes.

johnastovall Posted October 14, 2009 Share #25 Posted October 14, 2009 I rest my case The watch proves that you also have a specific taste, just not with respect to Leica colour Yep, and when I had a Jag it had to be BRG. But for right now with the M9 all my taste demands is a Full 35mm Frame, body color can wait. My Leicas are split as to black and chrome 2 black and 2 chrome. lars_bergquist Posted October 14, 2009 Share #26 Posted October 14, 2009 My M8 looks awesome in black chrome, especially since the white paint in the M8 logo fell out -- great improvement! And I have a black paint M9 on order, because the grey paint one looks like a cheap plastic camera. Ick. BUT I have always preferred silver chrome cameras, since the 1950's in fact, simply because this is the most robust and wear-resistant of all camera finishes, possibly with the exception of titanium. I did not like the M8 in silver chrome, because with the larger size of the top plate, there's such an awful expanse of it. But I have found that a nice Crescenzi half-case does cure that. Count me in! Down with grey paint! The old man from the Age of the Chrome Screw Thread Leicas

In general, I agree. Between chrome or black, I´d as well toss a coin (slightly biased towards chrome...). But that grey paint just looks CHEAP! Won´t have any of it, that´s all.... Bo_Lorentzen Posted October 14, 2009 Share #30 Posted October 14, 2009 I have a preference for chrome also. though I would happily pick up a titanium body, particularly if it saves a little weight. that said, its a camera, im pretty sure the color will not affect the pictures one bit, so I will take what I can get. . Guest EarlBurrellPhoto Posted October 14, 2009 Share #32 Posted October 14, 2009 The watch is a 25 year old Breitling Cosmonaute, black dial, sapphire front and back, Breitling did not use sapphire crystals on the Cosmonautes or Navitimers until 1992. The only Cosmonautes with exhibition backs were the Serie Speciale A12021 (1993) and A12023 (1994). So if yours is genuine it's either 15 or 16 years old. Lovely timepiece BTW. carstenw Posted October 14, 2009 Share #33 Posted October 14, 2009 My guess is that Leica was actively looking for ways to keep down the cost of the M9, and ended up cutting the chroming process. How many chrome-lovers would pay €500 more for the option? I don't know what it actually costs to make, but I can imagine that it would be more expensive than a spray-n-bake. You are correct it is an A12023. I thought I had it longer. It is a lovely watch. It is genuine as I got it new at Backendorf in Dallas on Special order. It was the only one they had ever sold up until then.
michael_b_elmer Posted October 14, 2009 Share #35 Posted October 14, 2009 +1. Heard rumour that Leica would make it for an order of 50 or more. Well, we could quickly gather 50 orders, couldn't we? ArtZ Posted October 14, 2009 Author Share #38 Posted October 14, 2009 Count me in as well. I'd never buy the battleship grey one. +100 and... I don't like the black paint either. The paint ones looks "cheap quality" (same for CV lenses) I do, and I think it is a failure on the part of Leica that they have not presented the M9 in the traditonal chrome finish. Titanium, safari green and white must probably wait until special models are presented when the M9 reaches the end of its product cycle. For the price that Leica demands for the M9 it ought to be possible to specify "accessories" a la carte, just like when ordering a Porsche, BMW or Mercedes. No problem either with "à la carte" program. I paid for the sapphire glass and frame lines on my both M8 or for my signature in one M8. I wouldn't mind to pay for real leather, for a top plate with no M8/M9 engravure or other options... but not way for having the standard classic chrome! +1 + sapphire glass + top panel OLED status indicator. Well, Mark, I have to agree with that... especially when the M8.2 has them as a standard. Yes, some people will cry "Leica has done that for reducing costs on the M9". When I see the only real difference between a M8 and a M9 is the sensor size, how can Leica explain the price increase from 4200 € (first M8) to 5490 € (M9) from October 2006 to September 2009? The R&D cost should have been reduced to a minimum for the M9 and I think 1290 € (three years later) for a FF sensor it's a bit too much. I don't care what color the M9 is black, grey, chrome or Hello Kitty Pink. I'm just glad to have it. Does 'real chrome' take a better picture? Well, everybody knows that chrome Leicas make better pictures! +1and "à la carte" wide angle viewfinder +100 for wide angle viewfinder "à la carte". In general, I agree. Between chrome or black, I´d as well toss a coin (slightly biased towards chrome...). But that grey paint just looks CHEAP! Won´t have any of it, that´s all.... +100 What about a petition to "ask" Leica to make one, not "demand" that they make one? Or "Petition demanding that Leica replaces the metal gray paint M9 for the classic Leica chrome" +1. Heard rumour that Leica would make it for an order of 50 or more. For 6990 € maybe? No way! My guess is that Leica was actively looking for ways to keep down the cost of the M9, and ended up cutting the chroming process. How many chrome-lovers would pay €500 more for the option? I don't know what it actually costs to make, but I can imagine that it would be more expensive than a spray-n-bake. Carsten, I doubt the price difference between "painted" and "chromed" (if there's one) will be 500 €! I'd say maximum 5 € I think Leica has done this not to keep down the cost but to give a modern look (black cameras are sold better than chrome ones -I heard 4 blacks for 1 chrome). The X1 has the same metal gray paint. Black Chrome. Or black chrome... for me the problem is paint!
Leicaiste Posted October 14, 2009 Share #39 Posted October 14, 2009 Black Chrome. +100 and... I don't like the black paint either. The paint ones looks "cheap quality" (same for CV lenses)-snip- Or black chrome... for me the problem is paint! I don't agree. IMO it is the black chrome on the M8 which look cheap and don't age very well. The black paint on the M9 is very nice, better than on the "shiny" M8.2.
