fotografr Posted September 16, 2010 Share #1 Posted September 16, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) A publicity shot done last night for a production of The Grapes Of Wrath. The M8 is the best camera I've ever found for this kind of work. M8, 35/2 ASPH

roguewave Posted September 16, 2010 Share #2 Posted September 16, 2010 Brent, what a stark background. Goes well with the subject matter. Nice WB in those bright lights.
fotografr Posted September 16, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted September 16, 2010 Thanks, Ben. I don't really have much choice for backgrounds on these shots because they are always done before the sets have been built. I shoot them in a theatrical lighting lab which is only equiped with a black curtain.

steve kessel Posted September 16, 2010 Share #7 Posted September 16, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Brent Very good moment indeed. Strong directional shadows possibly not best suited for this sort of photography? Best wishes Steve

phancj Posted September 17, 2010 Share #9 Posted September 17, 2010 I think the black background accentuates the 2 actors more, so attention is solely on them. Stunning sharpness and capture, perfect for promo shots. Thanks, CJ
squarenegs Posted September 17, 2010 Share #10 Posted September 17, 2010 Brent Excellent work! How do you meter your shots for this type of scene? Seem to me the stage with bright figures against a dark background would be the norm and not easy to handle without a spot meter. .....Determine your exposures during rehearsal, perhaps? fotografr Posted September 19, 2010 Author Share #12 Posted September 19, 2010 Brent Excellent work! How do you meter your shots for this type of scene? Seem to me the stage with bright figures against a dark background would be the norm and not easy to handle without a spot meter. .....Determine your exposures during rehearsal, perhaps? Regards, Sam Hi Sam, These shots were done in a small lighting lab we use for publicity shots so I was able to determine the exposure right next to the actors. After that, the lighting remained the same throughout the shoot for all the shots we set up. When I shoot actual run throughs, I have to use my Canons (for long lenses) and then I use the spot meter. You're right in your thinking about the black background throwing the readings off. Generally, just using the camera meter for those situations would result in a gross overexposure.
