Does anyone on this forum had any experience with M9 batteries purchased from Better Batt Pty. Ltd. of Melbourne Aus? On their web site is a claim that their M9 batteries 'are first to receive updated electronic chip'. The cost is very reasonable $ 30.67 (EUR 22) plus $ 10 for shipplig.

Well, you could make a case that there's no way the Leica battery should cost $130. Not that Leica makes them, anyway. For all we know $30 is closer to a realistic price.

Vladik, if you try one, please let us know how it goes.

Putting a cheap battery in an M9 is like putting cheap tyres on a Porsche.

If you buy a cheaper battery the electricity isn't 'cheap electricity', its not going to flow backwards or anything like that. The main problem with 'cheap' batteries until now is the camera won't show the true state of charge unless the battery has been fully discharged before recharging. But if you know its charged you can carry on using it no matter what the camera says. If the $30 ones have the chip that calibrates the camera battery level, then thats a bargain, and people will eventually stop bragging about how many OEM batteries they have because eveybody else will think 'why on earth did you spend so much'. :p

Apparently no one here has tried these particular batteries yet. If you try them, please do a follow up post to let us know how they work out. I didn't have good luck with the 3rd party battery that I tried for the M9. But 3rd party batteries (sterlingtek.com) for the Canon 5D & 40D worked perfectly and were much cheaper than the originals.

I ordered my M9 with two spare batteries, the store put the batteries on back order. I found another dealer with the two batteries I wanted and bought them. That was about 2 1/2 months ago. Two days ago I got a box with two Leica M9 batteries in it. These batteries are in Leica boxes, not third party. I was going to send them back to the store. If the OP wants them he can either PayPal me what I have in them or, I can tell him what store I'm sending them back to and he can order from them. Either way it's helping me because I do not need 5 batteries, 3 is plenty. If anyone has an interest send me a PM with your email address and we'll work it out.

Somebody makes the ‘’stock’’ Leica battery….. and it’s very possible for the same

or different manufacturer to make one as good for far less money. Having said that,

I have not had great luck with the ''cheap'' replacement batteries I have had

to buy in camera shops in an ‘’emergency’’…. but, one can’t just assume that if it isn’t

from Leica it’s automatically no-good.

Thank you for you thaughts re. the 3rd party batteries. I have two Leica ones, and that is all that I need for now. I had to wait for the second one for several month about 10 month ago.

Lets put this way, Leica does not make batteries. To put a temperature and currant monitorring chip into battery cercuit shoud not be that dificuilt for electronic engineer and the chips are cheap. Having said that I would be more confident using original Leica battery and that is what my decision will be made on when it comes to buy the next battery.

I would stick to Leica brand batteries. If a person can afford a $7000 camera, then risking cheapo batteries which are so easily counterfeited makes no sense at all.

But do your thing. Are you really going to tell us if you get screwed?

This thread will only be useful if people give the names of the non-Leica batteries they are using successfully or trying out. Reports of "duds" would be good too. Otherwise we are tilling the same ground over and over.... kind of like the 3rd Party Battery thread from just a few weeks ago.

There may be companies that make great batteries, let's name names so we know.

Pearstone is the name of the battery I tried. It held a charge very well, but did not report accurately. The camera would give battery low warnings when it is in fact full. Then, after warning of the impending shut down, and shutting down, it will suddenly report that the battery is full. The annoyance is not worth the cost savings. :(

Putting a cheap battery in an M9 is like putting cheap tyres on a Porsche.

That may be true, but not necessarily bad, in either case. My neighbour has two Porche's. Where we live he has no chance to drive the cars to their capacity. Recently he got a puncture and IIRC his one replacement cost the equivalent of a full set of tyres for my Saab Aero 1989! His driving 'experience' can be no better or worse than mine, but a lot more expensive!

Regarding the batts, I have 4 genuine Leica Batts. One is dodgy. I would be tempted to try the cheapy mentioned above, especially as it is supplied from 'near' me. However, I don't believe I really need another just yet. Now if my sole battery supply was non genuine, I might be concerned, but not necessarily, but for backup, fine. How many of us have a second M9 as backup as opposed to 'some other camera' that we trust? Where is the difference?
