So sorry to hear that. Even with insurance it must be disturbing and stressful. If you get a chance and are willing, perhaps you could outline the circumstances of the theft. It might help others in the future. Hope things work out for you.

If the OP has insurance, it shouldn't be an issue. This last January, I was assault by three young men who made off with my M-E and attached 18mm SEM. My renters insurance covered everything and actually paid me out more than what I paid for the kit. I received the full retail price of the lens even though I bought it used.

If I would have known that, I wouldn't have put up a fight and could have saved myself a black eye and a beat down.

My sympathies go out to both A Sfeir and Mijo. Here's hoping A Sfeir's gear is recovered in good condition, or covered by his insurance (hoping he has insurance).

I won't presume to speak for one and all, but I am getting damn tired of the all too frequent recounting of numerous stories of Leica thievery and robbery. There seems to be a bumper crop of asshole thugs these days.

Let's all be careful out there. Exercise discerning judgement and situational awareness when shooting on the streets. Pay attention to your intuition if you get a vibe that something isn't quite right; if you get the feeling that you are being watched or followed by a person/s with malicious intent, run. Get away from them and get to a place of safety.

San Francisco is definitely a dangerous city. I was on assignment there 10 days ago and had $80K worth of equipment stolen from a parked SUV at noon on a busy street (right in front of Gary Danko's, which is an upscale restaurant).

Everyone I talked to there seemed to have had their car broken into at least once and repeatedly told me how commonplace theft/robbery is in the city.

Ugh. Very sorry to hear that. Unbelievable how many thefts there are here these days--the consequence of rising inequality.

Currently reading this story in my hotel on Bush Street.

Have been shocked at the number of street-sleepers here, I have to say. But I'm pretty sure they're not the ones breaking into people's cars.

This is not the first time i hear of camera bags stolen in Paris. Because of the usual confusion, it is a dangerous place for camera bags. This is why I usually go around Paris with the camera hanging at a Y strap under my jacket and a second lens in my pocket.

Paris is a package deal with the numerous conurbations just over the Boulevard Périphérique !!!!

Please publish the full serial numbers as these items will tend to end up either sold to dealers who don't know the history or on ebay or similar.

I always do careful digging for any equipment being sold second hand without the box. Even more suspicious is without the charger or other basic things you would have thought the owner would keep. Although they can be sourced quite easily the criminals often don't in their haste.

Yikes. Glad you are okay. What time of day did this happen?

3:00 p.m. if you can believe it! I've lived in SF for 10 years now and have had my truck broken into three times. One of those times someone broke the lock off my bed cover and stole some old blankets that I used to keep the bed from getting scratched up. When I lived in Russian Hill there were a few mornings that I would leave my apartment and every car down an entire block had its passenger window broken out. Smash and grabs are just the norm these days in the city, it doesn't even matter what part of the city. If your parking in SF, never leave anything visible in your car (crack heads will break in just to steal the change in your cup holder).

I wasn't too suprised that I got jumped in the Mission, I knew the risk and I just got too comfortable being in that area. One of the members of a community darkroom that I belong to almost had his MF kit stolen in the Tenderloin a few weeks ago. His son showed up at the right time and the thief ran away. I work in the Tenderloin so I wasn't suprised that it happened, that's another area of the city that can be dangerous.

I hope your insurance agent didn't just read this. ;)

I told him that I bought the lens used and provided a copy of the reciept, it was required for the claim. My insurance will cover the full retail value for any item as long as it was purchased under a year. Anything over a year gets hit with depreciation, which is what happened with my M-E.

The upside is that I used the payout to purchase a MM and now my insurance will pay me out for what was deducted due to depreciation (so the full retail value of the M-E). I really lucked out in that the thieves didn't get my backpack as it had my MP and three other lenses. If they would have gotten that too, my insurance wouldn't have covered everything. I've since expanded my coverage so that it will cover all of my equipment, in case this happens again.

I apologize to the OP, if I'm hijacking this thread. My intent was to make them feel a little better in that someone else has recently gone through the same thing.

I read on here a year or so ago that someone was returning their rental car to the airport somewhere in Spain and an attempted car jacking was tried on them where the thieves flattened their tire then pulled up and offered to "help". The OP drove to the car rental place on the flat tire and was told it is an everyday occurrence.

Once I got chased by some thug in the RLD of Frankfurt but I don't think he necessarily wanted to steal anything, I think he didn't like the fact I was walking around taking photos of te street scenes.
