Stealth3kpl Posted February 3, 2012 Share #1 Posted February 3, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) My M2 has spent the day rolling around my backpack and being blasted by spindrift on its removal. When it's dried out it's going straight back into its display cabinet. Pete The wind was only 40mph but the ice crystals felt like metal or glass shards. leicaluke Posted February 3, 2012 Share #3 Posted February 3, 2012 good pictures.. what film were you using?
Stealth3kpl Posted February 3, 2012 Author Share #4 Posted February 3, 2012 It was Kodak Portra 800. I wasn't expecting to be using it in sunny and snowy conditions! I used a 3stop ND filter. Exposure was close to sunny 16. 1/125 at f16 I think

leicaluke Posted February 3, 2012 Share #6 Posted February 3, 2012 Almost seams to have a bluish tint to it.. which seams to work very good for those snow scenes. Is it a characteristic of the portra or was it post processed?
Stealth3kpl Posted February 3, 2012 Author Share #7 Posted February 3, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Yes, it does look a little too cyan in the shadows. The whites are white but it's a proscan so I always expect the colours to look a bit wacky. I'm not doing any scanning tonight. If I can make an improvement I'll repost. I do quite like it though. Stealth3kpl Posted February 3, 2012 Author Share #8 Posted February 3, 2012 It seems to suffer less in these shots:
leicaluke Posted February 3, 2012 Share #9 Posted February 3, 2012 Does seam interesting that it is only in some. I do love the lighting in these shots.
Stealth3kpl Posted February 3, 2012 Author Share #10 Posted February 3, 2012 Maybe it was the lighting. This is a friend's digital version:
pauledell Posted February 4, 2012 Share #11 Posted February 4, 2012 Your fine shots make me appreciate our odd weather. We reached 50 degrees F today which is about 15 to 20 degrees above normal. From what I have seen in the past, it is difficult to get the correct color balance with bright sun and deep blue sky influencing the picture. plasticman Posted February 4, 2012 Share #12 Posted February 4, 2012 Nothing unusual at all about blue (or often pink) shadows in snow. It probably has to do with light refraction through and reflection from all the snow crystals themselves, and a general reflection of the sky. But to be honest I don't know the science, I've just observed the phenomenon a million times. Incidentally, the film image of the fence looks more natural to me - and a nice shot! e1k3 Posted February 4, 2012 Share #13 Posted February 4, 2012 Brrr. One can feel the coldness when looking at your pictures. Difficult conditions for camera batteries I would think. Very nice set of pictures. I like #4 most for its beautiful colors and light captured.
Marquinius Posted February 5, 2012 Share #14 Posted February 5, 2012 Pete, Really fine photos and again I wonder about the quality of film versus pixels. Truly great colors.
Stealth3kpl Posted February 20, 2012 Author Share #15 Posted February 20, 2012 I finally got a few moments to attempt scanning Portra 800 to compare to the proscans (continuing from here ). I think the colours of the snow shot are a little better. It seems pretty straight forward to scan if you have as low expectations as I V700 Epson Scan.
