Hampstead, London Stroll

After a recent very pleasant meet up, shoot and stroll around the East End of London, EJD (thanks, John) has very kindly offered to lead a similar outing around Hampstead. The offer was made in the pictures from the East End meeting thread http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/other/56199-london-leica-meeting-june-14th-pictures.html but I felt that the Hampstead Stroll should have its own thread to save it from being lost, so ... here it is!

We need to fix a date and members have voiced interest in either a bi-weekly, monthly or bi-monthly outing in London so it makes sense that Hampstead Stroll should be one of those.

Please leave your indications of interest, suggestions for dates and times here so that we can get a feel for likely numbers and convenient dates.

Since I've started the thread I'll go first and say that I'm a definite starter and suggest a Saturday date 4 weeks hence - 19th July.

Pete.

Well done Pete for taking the initiative and starting up this thread.

A couple of general points spring to mind - too frequent meetings IMO run the risk of both running out of places to visit quickly (unless there are repeat visits of course), could reduce numbers of attendees, and might as a result die a death.

IMO a not too rigid 6-8 week interval seems to me to be just about right between late May and early October, with a pre-Christmas social meet.

Having said that 19 July is so far free in my calendar!

I agree, keep it as informal as possible and not too frequent - every couple of months is about right IMO.

I'm definately interested in a stroll around Hampstead, not an area I know very well. I understand that there's a very nice historic pub in the area too........Date is fine for me.

Fair enough, let's try for 6 weeks time then for a compromise between one and two months :).

How are people (particularly John) set for, say, 2nd August?

(Mark, since you live there, would you happen to know if this clashes with a particularly busy day in Hampstead- visit by royalty, trekky convention, Morris dancing, grunge concert, that kind of thing? :D )

Definitely up for Hampstead.

I often visit, as I live only a few stops away on the Northern Line and would welcome a "guided" tour/photo shoot - lots of history and architectural interest. And then there are the promenaders - a great mix of human interest. And if you are into flash motors there are usually a few around. Or, of course, we could have a "country" ramble on the Heath. Lots of good pubs.

I can't make the 19th July, but can do 2nd August or 16th August.

Thanks for the offer of hosting, John.

Tim

Pete, I think you might find Sunday is a better day, if people watching is your priority. Saturday is more a "taking care of business" day; Sunday is the day to chill out, walk on the Heath, take in a beer, do a little shopping. Lots of pubs (Holly Bush, as I've mentioned, The Flask, Freemason's Arms (fab garden if weather is good, go early)), The Wells Tavern and so on.

2nd or 3rd August is good for me. I actually prefer Saturdays to Sundays, but both have much to offer.

Mark -- we live not far from each other! I never would have guessed.

All the best,

John

I'll be up for a stroll around Hampstead, as well. I'm relatively free for the rest of my life, so I'll go with the flow on dates. 19th July sounds a bit too soon but 2nd August sounds fine. Personally, I prefer Saturdays but I can do Sundays as well.

Hampstead is a great idea. I'm just back from a function there this afternoon and the place was buzzing.

Plenty of historic back streets, nooks and crannies to visit plus the Heath itself. Mark, is the Holly Bush still lit by gas?

Having lived there for ten years I don't honestly see much difference between Saturday or Sunday - it's always busy and full of photo opportunities. The Residents' Parking bays are not in force on Sundays - for those who prefer to drive. Either day would be good for photography.

Sadly I can't do either proposed dates as we'll be away on summer hols. (26th/27th July, or any date after 21st August would be possible for me).

Enjoy.

Michael

  • 3 weeks later...

Dear all -- My plans for the coming weeks are in disarrray. I'm sorry about this. I said in a previous post that August 2nd would be good for me, but actually it turns out that I will not be able to make it then. The only day I can offer to lead a walk around Hampstead is Saturday 26th July. Is that any good for anyone? We could meet up at some spot -- like outside Belsize Park tube station, and take it from there, walk up into Hampstead and round about, and end with a drink and something to eat in a pub -- following the format of the v successful walk around the East End.

But I'm conscious that 26th July is only two and a half weeks away. Should we stick with this, or postpone until a later date? Would someone else like to lead a walk on a different date in the coming weeks. Your advice please!

All the best,

John

John must include a visit to the famous public toilets!

I would certainly include them! The only problem is that the only day I can make it is this coming Saturday 26th July. Are there enough of us to make this work?

Should the walk take place on the 2nd August? Unfortunately I'll not be able to take part then, but that's no problem, and perhaps someone else would act as a guide, or perhaps none is needed. Or do we go for a later date?

John
