486 IR cut Filter on an Elmarit 24 ASPH on an M7

Went out shooting with an M7 and Elmarit 24mm ASPH. The lens had a 486 filter that I did not think to take out.

Look at the cyan cast on the right (stronger) and left side of the image. All my Photographs with the 24mm + 486 had that...NOT the ones taken with the Noctilux.

I'm sure that I did not just discover this.. but your input would help. Thanks

This problem will be solved for coded lenses when firmware version 1.1 is released. This is scheduled for mid April 2007. This issue has been known for some time and if you do a search on IR Filters or Cyan Drift you should have plenty to read for a few days

That brings up an interesting question - I leave the IR filters attached to my lenses - do I really need them outside in daylight, or only indoors with incandescent lighting? Has anyone bothered to shoot scenes with and without these filters?

Woody: M7 :) The firmware update won't solve this.

Whoops, my bad about the M7. Should have read more carefully. However since we know the Cyan cast is caused by the IR Filter and since there is no need for the IR Filter on the M7 the solution is at least easy........take the filter off! Don't you wish all M problems were this simple to resolve.

Thanks for the catch Carsten

My experience is that you need them outdoors too. Foliage in particular gives weird results with the M8 because some plants reflect a lot of IR (resulting in a yellowing of their greens and overall brightening relative to what the eye sees) and others reflect very little.

Love the photograph. I am surprised no one has commented on it.

Colours, I didn't pick up on the cyan for a bit, and if you don't focus on technical error of it, I think it actually adds to the colours.

Subject, sweet smile, nice 2+1 grouping.

Framing, tight, good perspective and angle.

Backround, lovely, boards on the right are perfect.

Jean--

Maybe you can send the M7 back to Solms to have it updated to take the latest firmware?

What with the free time they've got right now, it shouldn't take them more than a year to get the modification done.

Is your 24 Elmarit coded? If yes, the simply set lens detection to ON in the camera menu. The current firmware (1.092) already has some capability to correct for this problem. See my post near the end of this thread:

It's an M7, not an M8!

Clear indication of what the firmware is having to do on the M8 to correct the cyan though...

Yes, sorry. I overlooked the M7 part of the message.
