cocker Posted November 10, 2007 Share #3 Posted November 10, 2007 Over the years I have bought far too many (mostly Billingham) camera bags. I think I have 6 !! Now I have the ideal storage for all my cameras and lenses! Each type of Camera I have (Leica-M, LTM, Medium Format) goes in a separate bag(s) and the bags are in a cupboard on shelves. I knew it was a good idea not to get rid of the old bags as I bought a new one!
fielden Posted November 10, 2007 Share #4 Posted November 10, 2007 Keith, You have too many cameras? and now too many bags? cwf Posted November 10, 2007 Share #6 Posted November 10, 2007 I use LowePro Extreme cases, which are a camera bag inside a hardshell. I have one small model, with no permanent residents, that I use for going out when portability is desirable. Several packets of drying agent reside in each case. StS Posted November 11, 2007 Share #7 Posted November 11, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have been advised not to store it in the leather case, since this seems to spread fungus (especially when getting wet). Apart from this, anything being dry and keeeping the dust away should do the job.
darkness30 Posted November 11, 2007 Author Share #8 Posted November 11, 2007 Friends thanks for the great answers. Apart from having a bag + silicajel solution, do you think the shutter should be cocked or not? Lenses being stored vertically or horizontally? What should be the aperture on the lens wide open or closed down? City that i live in is pretty dry and i don't have enough bags:) Billingham is out of question due to high price and unavailability. Thanks Mehmet
rubenkok Posted November 11, 2007 Share #9 Posted November 11, 2007 do you think the shutter should be cocked or not? I never store my cameras with tension on the shutter, I think is better this way See ''Store shutter cocked or uncocked?'' at Leica FAQ - How accurate is the M's mechanical shutter? Lenses being stored vertically or horizontally? Most of the Leica M lenses are flat on the camera side to let them stand on. It makes no diference how you store them. More important is that they are free from fingerprints, kept at room temperature and at low humidity. I keep mine in a protective wrap from RoadWired What should be the aperture on the lens wide open or closed down Its best to rotate the apperture ring from time to time By the way, my camera is in a Domke bag model F-3X regards Ruben
leitz_not_leica Posted November 11, 2007 Share #10 Posted November 11, 2007 $150 for an F-3?!? I bought a new F-X5, something or other for $30. Storing gear on a shelf somewhere is better than the dark...bugs like the dark...better to sell or donate, IMHO.
earleygallery Posted November 11, 2007 Share #11 Posted November 11, 2007 Use them, don't store them.
rsolomon Posted November 11, 2007 Share #12 Posted November 11, 2007 Do not keep in closed leather bag, this can trap whatever moisture there might be and cause fungus. a breathable bag in a place with normal air cirulation is best. i stor my lenses camera side down, this is the strogest part of the lens (and flat). i keep aperture somewhere i nthe middle (f8) don't know why but i do. lmr Posted November 12, 2007 Share #13 Posted November 12, 2007 I second James Earley... Use them. ...and if not used, exercise it once a month. Dry shoot on all speed, else the lube will eventually settle. If your equipment is in a box, you may forget to exercise it. Another thing to do is rotate your camera & lens use. darkness30 Posted November 14, 2007 Author Share #14 Posted November 14, 2007 Friends thank you very much for the great responses. I am already doing what is being suggested mostly. I just wanted to make sure that a gut feeling of mine is right. Regards Mehmet
gyoung Posted November 15, 2007 Share #15 Posted November 15, 2007 [quote What should be the aperture on the lens wide open or closed down Its best to rotate the apperture ring from time to time If you have the old type 2.8/50mm Elmar, I'm told by Malcolm Taylor its best to keep the lens wide open at 2.8 when not in use, something they use on the aperture blades etches the inside of the front element.
